3. Program MHX firmware 6. Report MCU Setup

1. Download MCU Setup Overview

- Download stored AID file

- Check file content
- Read change history in log file

¾ Enter engine serial number to obtain stored AID archive file

¾ Save & unzip file on local PC

Example:

File Description

iD-VP-Marine- Main software (firmware)

1.4_21205219_P01.mhx MHX

1016043674.log Change history

2. Download IDC package Overview

- Download PC tool DriveConfig from VPPN

- Download IDC software package from VPPN
- Import IDC to DriveConfig
- Change default ESL file in DriveConfig
- Restart DriveConfig

¾ Download DriveConfig from VPPN to local PC and run installation file.

¾ Open DriveConfig.

¾ Download latest software package from VPPN (example below 1.6)

¾ Open ZIP file and extract IDC package file to local hard drive

¾ Double click on IDC file for automatic import to DriveConfig folders of all important files.

The default Volvo archive files is copied into folder structure and can be accessed via
DriveConfig -> File -> Open and click on “Archives” (shown below)
Other information
Imported archive files can be used as base file when applying conversion function.
Below is shown file name versus MCU application (example firmware 1.6).

Alternative way to import IDC package:

¾ In DriveConfig open Options > Import Firmware

Note: Do not have any archive file open before importing new firmware.
¾ Click OK. Accept overwrite of files (Yes to all).

Example:

IMPORTANT!

¾ Change actual ESL file by Options > ESL files…

¾ Change “Selected” to latest Volvo ESL file (example shown is march 2012 Volvo-Aux3.1-
Prop3.1.esl).
¾ Click OK.
¾ Close DriveConfig application.
¾ Open DriveConfig.

Note: If DriveConfig close/open (restart) is forgotten then conversion will not be successful.

Further information
¾ The ESL file describes to DriveConfig which ESF that could be used. This is chosen by Volvo
Penta.
¾ The latest ESL and ESF should always be used.
¾ ESL file “ECU List – Volvo-aux-3.1-Prop-3.1.esl” version 1.3 describes following:
¾ EMS AUX, EME or COMB for D9, D12, D13, D16 engines uses “Volvo EMSI Singlespeed /
EMSII” in module “ECU” and “J1708/J1587 Support” as default.
¾ Normal user should never change this setting.

¾ EMS PRP for D9, D12, D13, D16 engines uses “Volvo EMSI Allspeed” in module “ECU” and
“J1708/J1587 Support” as default.

Note that “Volvo EMSI Allspeed” is used for EMS2-engines (D9,D16,D13) also.
Overview
3. Program MHX firmware
- Read out AID from installation (if needed)
- Program main software (firmware) to MCU
- Program main software (firmware) to Remote Panel

¾ Download configuration file, AID, direct from controller and store it on local PC if local MCU
archive has more valid status than the AID stored at VPPN.

Note: Change controller mode to STANDARD (from MODBUS) in order to read out AID
Note: If you want to store History Record read out content via DriveMonitor and export list to excel format.

¾ Save AID file on local PC

¾ Download firmware to MCU or Remote Panel, File > DCU Programming.

Example DriveConfig 2.9

Example DriveConfig 3.0

¾ Choose latest firmware to program.

¾ Click OK.
Note: Remote Panels must always be updated to version 2.2 or later when used when connected to a MCU
programmed with firmware 1.6.
Note: Remote Panel firmware loading requires a jumper to be set during downloading.
Note: DriveConfig is loading an AUX archive file as default into the controller when programming firmware.
Note: If “Can´t open COM” alarms then please check your COM port settings.
Overview
4. Convert AID configuration
- Open AID based on newest firmware
- Run Conversion wizard, import old AID file
- Change Service time
- Adjust speed request (firmware.1.4 based AID or
older only)
- Save file with new name

¾ Open downloaded IDC package file and rename it to .ZIP as extension name.
Example: ID-VP-Marine-1.6.IDC changed to ID-VP-Marine-1.6.ZIP

¾ Open ZIP file with WinZip and extract needed AID files to local folder.

¾ Open an AID file in DriveConfig based of the firmware version you want to convert to
(normally the latest released)

Note: If user wants to convert AID to other than latest firmware based AIDs then this AID should opened instead.
Note: If ESF warning dialog appears (as below), then Click OK and change to actual ESL file.

Example:
¾ Open File > Import configuration wizard…

¾ Select Source file (AID file to convert) and click Next.

¾ Preview target and source configuration differences before import.

Note: Blue marked is new parameters or has different values.

¾ Click Next button.

¾ Wait until Import progress is finished and click Next.
¾ Observe and check conversion Warnings and compare the list to accepted warning in the
appendix of this document. Click Next.

Note: All conversions from older archives based on old firmware’s will cause warnings. This is normal.

¾ To export conversion warnings to a text file then push icon:

¾ Observe target and source configuration differences after import. Click OK.
¾ Adjust Service Time parameter in Setpoints > Engine protect > Service time.

Note: Firmware 1.5 introduced different valid range for Service time parameter from 0-65535 to 0-65534. Value 65535
should manually be changed to 65534 or lower.
PRP manual adjustments if converted 1.5 based AID files (not

¾ Adjust I/O > Analog outputs > ECU-1 > 1 > Throttle In > (Source: Throttle In)

Note: Changing this setting will enable the engine to work with faster response for CAN/J1939 speed request.

Adjust Setpoints > Loadsharing > RQSP ramp > 100 %/s

Note: Changing this setting will enable the engine to work with faster response for redundant speed request on
J1708/J1587.
AUX/CMB/EME Manual Adjustments if converted 1.4 based AID files or older

¾ Adjust I/O > Analog outputs > ECU-1 > 1 > Not used to
Source: Engine values > Speed request

¾ Change ECU value to Accelerator Pedal Position

Note: Changing this setting will enable the engine to work with redundant speed request for primary data link CAN/J1939
and secondary data link J1708/J1587.

¾ Save the file with a unique file name.

Note: Do not overwrite Volvo Penta default AID file.

Overview
5. Program AID to MCU
- Download converted AID file to MCU

¾ Download the AID to the MCU.

Note: Password when downloading AID is 0.

Note: Dialog “Incompatible sw version or branch” will appear if the MCU has old firmware.
Overview
6. Report MCU Setup

- Access the report form at VPPN

- Fill in the form completely
- Attach changed AID file

¾ Click link “Report MCU Setup” on VPPN

¾ Complete the form and attach AID file.
APPENDIX Deviations Due To Conversion
The default 1.5 archive file (without conversion) will have FuelUsed and RunHours in Statistics menu
(not D12 engine).

If a 1.4 AID is converted to 1.5 then FuelUsed and RunHours will disappear from Statistics menu.

That data can instead be seen in Engine Data menus.
