MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

1. Define the following:

Material - A substance that is used to make things. Materials can be natural or synthetic,
and they can be used to make a wide range of products, from clothing to buildings to
electronics.
Material Science - This is an interdisciplinary field that explores the structure, properties,
and performance of materials. It involves aspects of physics, chemistry, and engineering
to understand and manipulate materials for various applications, from manufacturing to
electronic devices.
Material Engineering - It is a field of study and practice that involves the design and
selection of materials for a wide range of applications. Materials engineers focus on
understanding the properties and behaviors of materials to develop new materials or
improve existing ones.

2. Give 4 components of Material Science.

● Structure: Examining the arrangement of atoms and molecules in a material, as well
as the relationships between them, to understand how it influences the material’s
properties.
● Properties: Investigating the characteristics of materials, such as mechanical, thermal,
electrical, and optical properties, to comprehend their behavior under different
conditions.
● Processing: Studying the methods used to produce, shape, and modify materials. This
involves understanding manufacturing processes and their impact on the structure and
properties of materials.
● Performance: Evaluating how materials behave in real-world applications, considering
factors like durability, reliability, and functionality to ensure they meet the desired criteria
in specific environments or uses.
3. Give the classification of Engineering Materials and describe each.
● Metals and Alloys: These materials are composed of metallic elements and are known
for their high strength, ductility, and toughness. They are widely used in the construction
of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Examples include iron, steel, copper, and
aluminum.

● Ceramics: These materials are inorganic, non-metallic solids that are typically
crystalline in structure. They are known for their high melting points, hardness, and
brittleness. Ceramics are used in the production of electrical insulators, cutting tools,
and biomedical implants.

● Polymers: These materials are composed of long chains of repeating units and are
known for their low density, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion. They are used in the
production of a wide range of products, including packaging materials, textiles, and
medical devices.

● Composites: These materials are composed of two or more different types of

materials and are designed to have specific properties that are not found in any single
material. Examples include fiber-reinforced composites, which are used in the
construction of aircraft and automobiles, and metal-matrix composites, which are used
in the production of high-performance engine components.

● Semiconductors: These materials have electrical conductivity between that of a

conductor and an insulator. They are used in the production of electronic devices such
as transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits .

● Bio Materials: These materials are used in the production of medical implants,
prosthetics, and other devices that come into contact with biological systems. Examples
include titanium alloys, which are used in the production of dental implants, and
hydrogels, which are used in the production of contact lenses.
