Mathematics Lesson Plan Model - Updated 2021

This mathematics lesson plan targets 3rd grade students and focuses on fractions. The 1 hour lesson uses various teaching methods like peer learning, discovery learning, and cooperative learning to help students meet three key objectives: 1) divide objects into equal parts, 2) define fractions, and 3) write fractions that represent portions of wholes. The plan outlines prerequisite skills, materials, strategies, content, motivational introduction, developmental activities, closure, follow-up work, and evaluation.

Preferences:
Date: 5th September, 20##

Unit: Fractions

Time: 10 am

Topic: Identification and Addition of Fractions

Duration: 1 hour

Type of Lesson: [] Concept

[ ] Algorithmic
[ ] Kinaesthetic
[] Drill Practice
[ ] Skill Application
[ ] Problem-Solving

OBJECTIVES: (Students will be able to :)

1. Divide whole objects into n equal parts, where n = 2, 3, 4, 8.
2. Define a fraction.
3. Write numerically a fraction k/n, which is equivalent to a portion of a whole object,
where n = 2, 3, 4, 8.
4. Appreciate the need for using fractions by correctly identifying the role of fractions in at
least two real life scenarios.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

1. Counting numbers and the meaning of a count.
2. Partition a set of discrete elements.
3. Order whole numbers

MEDIA & MATERIALS

1. Overhead projector
2. Card-shapes for divisions
3. Crayons
4. Chart of whole numbers and fractions
5. Bag of objects of varying quantities

STRATEGIES
1. Peer learning
2. Discovery (Inductive) Learning
3. Cooperative Learning – Numbered Heads Up
4. Cooperative Learning – Group Investigation

CONTENT CONCEPTS
 Definitions:
i. Equal portion – an amount that is of the same size as another amount
ii. A fraction k/n is a quantity expressing k parts out of a total of n parts
The following are examples of the definitions above.
…..
 Notes
(i) To divide an object in equal parts, markings or creases must be placed on
the object, such that each portion is identical in size. The diagram of the
circular object is divided into three equal parts.
(ii) To find the fraction of a portion of an object separated into n equal parts, where n is a
counting number, we count the number of parts (k) of the portion of the object. Now, we
can express the portion as a number fraction k/n.
Example: if we count 2 parts of the object of 3 equal parts, then our
count expresses a number fraction of “2 out of 3” or symbolically, 2/3.
This fraction matches the portion shaded in the diagram.

MOTIVATIONAL INTRODUCTION
Use a story scene of hunger and equal portions to discuss briefly fairness when sharing something
among a group of persons.

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Objective 1:
Peer Learning
1. Students will be differentiated into groups of visual & kinaesthetic learners
2. Each differentiated group will be provided with objects that correspond with their learner
preferences. Example: the visual learners will be given a set of objects drawn on a large chart,
while the kinaesthetic learners will obtain similar concrete objects. With the objects, each group
will:
a. Review among themselves what it means for two objects to be identical. If required
students may be prompted to recall and use their observations from the motivational
introduction.
b. Select and classify those objects, which are congruent.
c. Select 2 objects that are not congruent.
d. Select 4 different regular plane shapes from the set of objects and make group decisions
on how best to partition the shapes into either 2, 3, 4 or 8 parts.
e. Each person in the group must divide a plane shape into equal parts.
f. Application: Each person in the group will be required to divide a plane shape into five
equal parts.
Objective 2:
Discovery Learning
3.
4.
Objective 3:
Numbered Heads Up
5.
6.

2
CLOSURE:
1. A chart will be displayed showing a number of tasks that students had to accomplish in the
developmental activities.
2. Each student will be given three coloured stickers – green (represents I can do the task) and
red (represents I found the task difficult). Each student will stick next to each task on the chart,
either a green or a red sticker.
3. The class would be divided into four groups. Each group will conclude what is one thing they
would like to know about after trying the tasks in the lesson.
4. Each group’s decision will be audio taped.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES/ ASSIGNMENTS

Students who struggled to achieve successfully objectives 1 & 3 will complete 4 homework
questions on Worksheet 2.

EVALUATION
