Lesson
Summarize various text
1 types based on elements

Text types in literature form the basic styles of writing. Factual texts
merely seek to inform, whereas literary texts seek to entertain or otherwise engage
the reader by using creative language and imagery.

What’s In

Do you still remember the different elements of a literary text? Can you
them? Can you say something about them?

6
What’s New

Do you know what animal is this? How would you

describe such beast? If you can see this running
towards you, what will you do? Did you hear a story
about “The Lion and the Mouse”? Now, here it is!

The Lion and the Mouse

Once when a lion, the king of the jungle, was asleep, a little mouse
began running up and down on him. This soon awakened the lion, who placed his
huge paw on the mouse, and opened his big jaws to swallow him.

"Pardon, O King!" cried the little Mouse, "Forgive me this time. I shall
never repeat it and I shall never forget your kindness. And who knows, I may be
able to do you a good turn one of these days!”

The Lion was so tickled by the idea of the mouse being able to help him that
he lifted his paw and let him go.

Sometime later, a few hunters captured the lion, and tied him to a tree. After
that they went in search of a wagon, to take him to the zoo.

Just then the little mouse happened to pass by. On seeing the lion’s
plight, he ran up to him and gnawed away the ropes that bound him, the king of
the jungle.

"Was I not right?" said the little mouse, very happy to help the lion.

Answer the following questions orally with your learning facilitator at home.

a. Why does the King lion awaken?

b. Why did the lion not eat the mouse?

c. What happened to the lion one day?

d. Who saved him from the hunters?

e. How did the mouse save the lion?

f. What could have happened if the mouse did not help him?

g. What lesson did you get from the story?

h. What will be another possible ending of the story?

7
What is It

Who are the characters of the story? Where did the story happen? What are the
important events that make up the story?

All the answers of these questions are some elements of a literary text, fictional
or non-fictional.
Here are the elements of a story:

1. Character: a person or an animal in a story

2. Setting: the time and place in which the story unfolds/happens
3. Plot: the structure of the story. The sequence in which the author arranges
the events in a story
4. Conflict: a struggle or clash between characters
5. Resolution: the part of a story in which the conflict is resolved
6. Summarize: to capture all the most important parts of the original text
(paragraph, story, poem), but express them in a much shorter space and
in the reader’s own words.

What is text? What are the different text types?

A text is a piece of writing that you read or create.

The type or the characteristics of a text are very important for any work of
summarization on it. It is easier to select the main ideas from certain types of
texts, as the narrative ones (texts “telling a story”) then from others, such as
expository texts (texts “speaking about”).

Text Types Meaning Structure

1. Recount Tells what o Background information about
happened who, where and when
o Series of events in chronological
order
o Personal expressions of attitude
and feelings

2. Narrative Tells a story o Orientation- who/what, where

and when

o Resolution
3. Procedure Tells how to do o Opening statement of goal or aim
something o Materials required listed in order
of use

order

8
they are, or how o Concluding statement
things work
5. Description Details the o Opening statement introducing
characteristic the subject
features of a o Characteristic features of the
particular thing subject
o Concluding statement (optional)

A Summary

o The purpose of a summary is to give the reader, in about 1/3 of the original
length of a text, a clear, objective picture of it and to give the basic ideas of
the original reading: what was it about and what did the author want to
communicate?
o Most importantly, the summary restates only the main points of a text.

Before writing the summary:

o Sometimes, the central idea of the text is stated in the introduction of the first
paragraph, and the supporting ideas of this central idea are presented
one by one in the following paragraphs.
o Always read the introductory paragraph thoughtfully and look for a master
statement. Frequently, however, the central idea, is implied or suggested.
o Pay attention to the title and any headings and to the opening and closing
lines of paragraphs.

Writing the Summary

o Support your topic sentence with the necessary reasons or arguments raised
by the author.
o Write an introductory paragraph that begins with an outline including
introducing the main idea.
o Use discourse markers that reflect the organization and controlling idea of
the original: cause- effect, comparison-contrast, classification, process,
chronological order, persuasive argument, etc.
