Thank you for purchasing Shimadzu analytical instrument
workstation “LabSolutions SIMDIS GC Software” (hereafter
referred to as “the software”).

This software is for SIMDIS Analyzing / Processing in the


LabSolutions system.

Installing this software allows you to develop SIMDIS


methods or to Analyze / Process from the LabSolutions.

The operating requirements for the PC are the same with


those for LabSolutions.

This manual describes the procedures for operating this


product. Read this manual thoroughly before using the
product and operate the product in accordance with the
instructions in this manual.

Also, keep this manual for future reference.

This manual assumes that the reader is knowledgeable of


basic operations of Windows. For the operation of Windows,
refer to the instruction manual that comes with that product.

Important • If the user or installation location changes, ensure that this


Instruction Manual is transferred with the product.

• If this manual is lost or damaged, immediately contact your

Warranty Shimadzu provides the following warranty for this product.

1. Period: Please contact your Shimadzu representative for information about the
period of this warranty.

2. Description: If a product/part failure occurs for reasons attributable to Shimadzu


during the warranty period, Shimadzu will repair or replace the
product/part free of charge (including USB dongles). However, in the
case of products which are usually available on the market only for a
short time, such as personal computers and their peripherals/parts,
Shimadzu may not be able to provide identical replacement products.

3. Limitation of (1) In no event will Shimadzu be liable for any lost revenue, profit or
data, or for special, indirect, consequential, incidental or punitive
Liability: damages, however caused regardless of the theory of liability,
arising out of or related to the use of or inability to use the product,
even if Shimadzu has been advised of the possibility of such
damage.
(2) In no event will Shimadzu’s liability to you, whether in contract, tort

6) Turning OFF the product without following the proper shutdown
procedure leading to device failures and damage to data and
software, including the product's basic software
7) Reasons unrelated to the product itself

8) Product use in harsh environments, such as those subject to high


temperatures or humidity levels, corrosive gases, or strong
vibrations
9) Fires, earthquakes, or any other act of nature, contamination by
radioactive or hazardous substances, or any other force majeure
event, including wars, riots, and crimes
10) Product movement or transportation after installation

Note: Recording media such as floppy disks and CD-Roms are
considered consumable items.

This paragraph describes the procedure to install the SIMDIS GC software
• This software runs on the Windows 10 Pro(64bit) and Windows 7 Profesional(32bit / 64bit) operating
systems. Confirm that the PC has the proper operating system.
• Please install this SIMDIS GC software after finish installing LabSolutions. if install this software before install
LabSolutions, this SIMDIS GC software does not work properly.
• If install this software for LabSolutions CS, need to install this software on both of Acquisition server and
Client-PC.

1 Activate the license for SIMDIS GC Analysis Insert the accessory USB dongle into USB
port on the PC.

Refer to the Software License Authentication Instructions to activate the license.

For USB dongle, insert the dongle into USB port on the PC.

2 Turn on the PC, start windows and insert the install disk into the disk drive.

If the [LabSolutions SIMDIS Installer] window does not automatically start use the following procedure to
start the setup program. The disk drive is E in the following example. Use the correct disk drive where “E:\”
appears in the example.

1. click the (start) menu.


2. Enter “E:\setup.exe”, and press the [enter] key.

Installation begins.
The [InstallShield Wizard Complete] window opens when installation is complete.

This paragraph describes the procedure to uninstall the SIMDIS GC Option software

1 Open [Add or Remove Programs] in the Control Panel.

Open [Program and Features] in ]Windows 7 / Windows Vista.

2 Click [ LabSolutions SIMDIS]


Click [Uninstall].

Uninstallation begins.
[LabSolutions SIMDIS] is deleted after uninstallation ends.

After uninstallation, Intialize the customization information in [Customization Information] window in


[Administration Tools] on Labsolutions Main window.

This Chapter describes the procedure to Set the SIMDIS parameters with n-parafin calibration mixture
data and create the RT - BP Calibration Curve.
To create SIMDIS Method uses mainly following window.
• [SIMDIS Method] window to set SIMDIS GC Analysis parameter.
• [Ret. Time - BP Calibration Curve Viewer] window to display the RT - BP Calibration Curve. 22
Above windows are opend from the menu or tool bar on LabSolutions [Calibration] window.

Refer to “3 GC Data Acquisition” in Operators Guide and analyze the n-paraffin Calibration mixture.

Set the sample type [Standard ] to acquire the n-paraffin Calibration mixture. 2

the [Calibration] window from the [Data Explorer] sub-window.

The content of the method is displayed in the [Calibration] window.

window.

• Overview of each Method is as follows.
Total Area
• Calculate distillation curve with total area of chromatogram.
Ext. Standard
• Use this method when calculate distillation curve of unknown sample with external standard
data. This method is based on ASTM D7169.
Int. Standard (Single)
• Use Int. Standard method when all compounds are not eluted like as lubricant oil / crude oil.
Single method is used when elution of internal standard sample does not overlap with elution
of unknown sample.
Int. Standard (Double)
• Double method is used when elution of internal standard sample overlap with elution of
unknown sample. This method is based on ASTM D5307.
• Set the Standard area as follows.

• Set the start and end time of standard sample eluting (In the case of above, Start : around 16 min, End :
around 20 min).
• If the boiling point of standard compound is given, choose the “Temp” and set the start temperature and
end temperature.

In this case, The difference between 2 consective area slice exceeds 0.00001% of total area (green arrow),
that point is set as start eluting point.
For the end eluting point, the software applys the same process from the end to backward.

In External Standard Method, analyze the external standard sample first, and then analyze unknown
samples. Set the solvent and sample amount of both external standard and unknown sample.
Create the batch table for external standard with following procedure.

• Set the Analysis method “Ext. Standard” of SIMDIS GC Method.


• When use the result of Blank run, set the datafile to [Background] and [Backgroung Data File] column of
all analysis rows .

1 Right-click on the batch table and click [Table Style].

[Table Style] dialog is displayed.

2 Click [Add] with [Sample Amt.] and [SIMDIS GC] are chosen and add to [Display Items].
And then click [OK].

3.1 Batch Processing

• Calculate the distillation curve with the result of external standard sample analysis and unknown
sample analysis. Create the batch table so that unknown sample analysis is set after external
standard sample analysis. If unknown sample analysis is before external standard analysis, the
distillation curve for external standard cannnot be calculated.
• Unknown sample can be analyzed continuously. First external standard sample analysis result is
used for calculating distillation curve until next external standard sample is analyzed.
• For External Standard Method, recovery is calucated by following equations.

• Set the Analysis method “Int. Standard (Single)” of SIMDIS GC Method.


• When use the result of Blank run, set the datafile to [Background] and [Backgroung Data File] column of
all analysis rows.

When you wish to run multiple SIMDIS GC Method, you need to use the Batch Queue function.

1 Select [Add to Queue with Selected Batch File] on the Batch menu during realtime
batch.

2 Select a batch file on in the [Open Batch File] sub-window, and click [Open].

The batch file is added to the batch queue.

To analyze the distillation data use mainly follwing window.
• [Distillation information] window to display the result of distillation of one data.
• [Recalculate] window to change the SIMDIS GC Method parameters of one data and recalulate.
• [Distillation Curve Comparison] window to compare the distillation curve of multiple data. 4

4.2 SIMDIS Data processing


To perform SIMDIS data processing, open the [Recalculate] window on [Data Analysis] window, and then
change the SIMDIS method parameters.

4.2.1 Change SIMDIS GC Method parameters

1 Open the data file on [Data Analysis] window, and then click the [Recalculate] in
[Distillation GC] menu and open the [Recalculate] window.

The [Recalculate] window can also be opened by clicking the (Recalculate SIMDIS) icon.

2 Set the SIMDIS Method parameters on [Recalculate] window, and click [OK].

SIMDIS GC Method is set, and Data processing is applied.

4.3 Compare the distillation curve

• If the parameters for calibration curve is changed, calibration curve is deleted and SIMDIS data
processing is cleared. If the following parameters is changed , calibration curve is deleted. Perform the
Postrun Analysis when re-create the BP-RT Calibration Curve.
• Use Other Detector BP-RT Calib. Curve
• BP-RT Calib. Curve Type
• BP-RT Calib. Curve X-axis
• Compound table (STD sample, Use for Calib, Compound Name, Ret. time, Boiling P)
• If Analysis Method is changed from the method that distillation curve is calculated with one data to
calculated with two data, SIMDIS data processing is not done.

The calculation result of column resolution, peak skewness and response factor can be displayed in
[Result View] - [Compound] tab on [Data Processing] window.

1 Open the sample type [Standard] data file on [Data Analysis] window.

2 Click the [Compound] tab on [Result View].

• 2 compounds to calculate column resolution are need to be identified consecutively.


• To check column resolution, column performance calculation method is need to be set. Refer to "6.1.1

Set [Parameters] to “Tailing Factor” or “Tailing Factor(10%)” for a compound to check peak skewness, and
input [Lower Limit] and [Upper Limit] of check.

To calculate peak skewness, “Tailing Factor” uses 5% peak height and “Tailing Factor(10%)” uses 10% peak
height. If you comply with ASTM, choose “Taling Factror” or “Tailing Factor(10%)” as follows.

1 Open [Batch Analysis] window and right-click on the batch table and click [Table Style].

2 Click [Add] with [System Suitability] is chosen and add to [Display Items]. And then
