Chem Properties of Metals 2

1) Newlands arranged elements in order of relative atomic mass and found they repeated in a pattern like the octaves in music. However, his periodic table was not widely accepted. 2) Mendeleev improved on Newlands' work by leaving gaps for undiscovered elements and arranging elements based on both atomic mass and chemical properties. 3) The modern periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing proton number and electron configuration. Transition elements are more useful than alkali metals for water pipes due to being less reactive and resistant to corrosion.

Q9. John Newlands was a chemist who worked in a sugar factory.

In 1866 he designed a periodic table.

He arranged the elements in order of their relative atomic masses.

He found a repeating pattern for some of the elements.

Newlands wrote, ‘the eighth element starting from a given one, is a kind of repetition of the first,
like the eighth note in an octave of music’.
