SECTION IV: READING COMPREHENSION

Read the text below and circle the correct answer; a / b / c / d.
The world of telecommunications is a world of constant change. Let’s take a look at how much things
have changed over the years. By 1876, many people had spent a lot of time and effort to develop the
telephone. At this stage, the telephone was a simple device that allowed people to talk to each other from
one room of a house to another. The next step had telephones connected from people’s houses to their
offices, or from companies to companies, but these were fixed lines that could only be used for that
purpose. The next biggest step in telephones was the switchboard. This allowed anyone with a telephone
to become a subscriber and get their own line. Then using a huge arrangement of plugs, sockets and
wires, an operator would connect the caller with any other subscriber on that switchboard by connecting
the correct plug to socket. These switchboards began as local units, then spread to statewide, then
national wide and finally international. At this time, having a telephone in your house was not
uncommon, but people who wanted to make a long-distance call went to a special building where there
was less interference from noise and other disturbances.
By the 20th century, the telephone was very popular. The design had changed to make it easy to
use and you could find a telephone in most households. In the 1930s, a new design, using a rotary dial
was introduced. This allowed people to make calls much more easily and developments in the
switchboards meant that now you could make a local call without using the operator. By the 1950s,
modernization had allowed people to begin to make operator-free international calls. The rotary design
was continued until the 1960s, when a new system called touch-tone started to become popular. In the
early 1970s, Motorola launched the new mobile phone. This was the first telephone to use cellular
technology. In the late 1980s, cable television companies started putting telephone lines in their
underground ducted services. Now, we have smartphones, which have all sorts of features and functions,
and you can even make video calls using the internet.
