Section A: Administrative details
Welcome
Welcome to MATENB1 – Applications of Calculus for Engineers. In this module you will expand your
knowledge of integration techniques and also learn to apply them to problems such as area and
volume calculations as well as differential equations. Furthermore, you will learn how derivatives
affect the shape of curves and how to sketch a wide range of functions.

General information
Textbook
The prescribed textbook for MATENB1 is
Calculus: Early Transcendentals (9th edition) by James Stewart
Metric International Version, Thomson Brooks/Cole
ISBN nr: 978-0-538-49887-6
If you have the e-book version (all students who took MATENA1 in 2016 or 2017 will have this)
please go to www.gradnet.com/uj for assistance in accessing the e-book.
Please note that there are many copies of this textbook available for use in the library. They are of
the 7th edition. These are not allowed to be checked out, and are thus more easily available for many
students to use.
Solutions manuals for all exercises in the textbook are available for use in the Mathematics Learning
Centre (C-Ring 512). Please ask one of the tutors on duty for a solutions manual.
Second-hand copies of earlier editions (3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th) can also be used. The explanation of the
material is almost identical. The numbering of the exercises is sometimes different, but these older
second-hand versions are often a more affordable option.
If you are not able to access your own textbook or a copy in the library, the following textbooks are
available for free online. They provide a good explanation of most of the topics covered as well as
additional exercises on which to practice:
TUTORIAL FORMAT
During each week a list of problems (from the textbook) will be posted on Blackboard. Students
should complete at least these problems in preparation for the tutorial the following week. The
tutorials are then an opportunity to attempt more problems and to seek assistance from tutors and
lecturers.
The saying “mathematics is not a spectator sport” should always be remembered. You will not learn
if you only attend lectures. You must also get your hands dirty by working on problems outside of
class time.
A class test will be written each week during the tutorial and the marks from these tests will contribute
towards your semester mark. Your performance in these tests provide an excellent way of checking
if you are properly understanding the material covered in each week’s lectures.

Lecture and Tutorial Schedule
LECTURE SCHEDULE:
TUTORIAL SCHEDULE:
You only have to attend one of the tutorial sessions per week. You can choose one tutorial session
according to your time table.

Assessment opportunities
Assessment opportunities for MATENB1 will consist of two semester tests, weekly class tests and
four electronic tests. A possible guideline for the compilation of your semester mark for MATENB1
might be as follows:
Sick Tests
Procedure:
• If you are sick on the day of a semester test, an official application form available on
Blackboard must be handed in for a sick test.
• The doctor must also complete this application form, or your doctor’s note should be
attached to the application form.
• This application form must be handed in within 7 days from the date of the test to the
assistants at the front desk of the Mathematics Department.
• There are no sick tests for class tests and electronic assignments.
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for the following:
• General administrative information on the course
• Important announcements
• Electronic assignments
You should log on to Blackboard at least twice a week.
The Learning Centre at the Mathematics Department (C-Ring 512, 2nd passage) offers one-on-one
help by experienced senior students who are available at the following times:
Monday 10:00 – 15:00 Tuesday – Thursday 08:00 – 15:00 Friday 08:00 – 12:00
5
Khan Academy
This excellent online learning platform will be used extensively, especially in the Saturday classes.
Khan Academy hosts videos explaining the topics covered in class as well as exercise engines that
challenge you to complete questions on the various topics. All details are posted on Blackboard.
Module details
NQF Credits 15
The purpose of this module is to develop a thorough knowledge of the main applications of the
theory of differentiation and integration of one variable functions, and to include an understanding
of the key terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules and theories.
6
Description of the module
The content of this module is focused on applications of various Calculus concepts. The main
topics covered are
- Integration techniques
- Minimum and maximum values of functions
- The Mean Value Theorem and Rolle’s Theorem
- Curve sketching
- Areas between curves
- Volumes and surface areas of solids of revolution
- Lengths of curves
- Differential equations
- Parametric equations
- Polar coordinates
- Binomial Theorem
- Elementary Linear Algebra
Module Outcomes
At the end of this module the student should be able to do the following:
Define the terms absolute maximum and minimum values and determine these values.
Find the volume of the solids of revolution formed by rotating functions about the different axes.
Use the formulas for arc length and surface area to determine these values for curves.
Express curves in terms of parametric equations and apply several methods of Calculus to these
parametric equations.
Determine the polar coordinates of Cartesian points and sketch the graphs of polar curves.
Represent systems of linear equations using matrices and solve such systems using Gaussian
elimination

Students should take special notice of the importance with which the University regards academic
integrity. A student who is found guilty of a transgression relating to academic dishonesty (for
10
example possessing notes during a test or examination or plagiarising an assignment) may face a
penalty that ranges from cancellation of the module in which the transgression was committed to
permanent expulsion from the University.
