Applications of Mirrors and Lenses PDF

Convex and concave mirrors and lenses have various applications in optical instruments due to their properties of reflection and refraction. Convex mirrors are used in car side mirrors and security mirrors, while concave mirrors are used in headlights, dental mirrors, and telescopes. Convex lenses are used in magnifying glasses, cameras, microscopes, binoculars, and the human eye lens. Concave lenses are used to correct nearsightedness and in cameras and peepholes to improve image quality and field of view.

Identify ways in which
the properties of mirrors
and lenses determine
their use in optical
instruments
OBJECTIVES
▶Explain ways in which the
properties of mirrors and
lenses determine their use in
optical instruments
▶Determine the uses and
functions of some optical
instruments
APPLICATIONS OF
MIRRORS AND LENSES
IN OPTICAL
INSTRUMENTS
▶ piece of glass or other transparent substance that is used to form an
image of an object by focusing rays of light from the object. A lens is a
piece of transparent material, usually circular in shape, with two
polished surfaces, either or both of which is curved and may be either
convex (bulging) or concave (depressed). The curves are almost always
spherical; i.e., the radius of curvature is constant. A lens has the valuable
property of forming images of objects situated in front of it.
▶ A lens is a transmissive optical device that focuses or disperses a light
beam by means of refraction.

LENSES
What’s New?
REFRACTION

▶ is the bending of light (it also

happens with sound, water and
other waves) as it passes from
one transparent substance into
another.

Mirrors and Lenses
APPLICATIONS OF MIRROR

• Plane mirrors are used by all of us daily in our

bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, etc.

• Periscopes - an instrument for observation over,

around or through an object, obstacle or
condition that prevents direct line-of-sight
observation from an observer's current position.

• Kaleidoscopes - a toy consisting of a tube

containing mirrors and pieces of colored glass or
paper, whose reflections produce changing
patterns that are visible through an eyehole when
the tube is rotated.
CONVEX MIRRORS

▶ Side mirror on your car

▶ Convex mirrors are also often
found in the hallway of various
buildings including hospitals,
hotels, schools, stores and
apartment building (or even on
sharp turn roads)
CONCAVE MIRRORS

▶ Headlights
▶ Dentist’s Mirrors
▶ Makeup/Vanity mirrors
▶ Astronomical Telescope
▶ Mirror Found near the base of
the Microscope
▶ Safety reflector
▶ Solar Cooker
CONVEX LENS

▶Magnifying glasses - (called a hand lens in

laboratory contexts)
CONVEX LENS

▶ Cameras- is an optical instrument used to capture

an image.
CONVEX LENS
▶ Compound Microscopes - Consists of a
combination of lenses for magnifying
an object several hundred times. It
uses two converging lenses with short
focal lengths.
CONVEX LENS
▶ Telescope - device used to
form magnified images of
distant objects. The telescope
is undoubtedly the most
important investigative tool in
astronomy.
CONVEX LENS
▶ Binoculars- Consist of a
pair of telescopes
mounted together, each
having an objective lens
and an eyepiece.
CONVEX LENS

▶ Projector - or image
projector is an optical
device that projects an
image (or moving
images) onto a surface,
commonly a projection
screen.
CONVEX LENS

▶ Photocopier - machine
that makes copies of
documents and other
visual images onto paper
or plastic film quickly and
cheaply.
CONVEX LENS
▶ The Human eye lens is a
transparent biconvex
structure that, along with
the cornea, helps to refract
light to be focused on the
retina.
CONVEX LENS
▶ Convex lens used in eyeglasses – used to correct
hyperopia which is also called far-sightedness.
CONCAVE LENS
▶ Concavelens used in eyeglasses – used to correct
myopia which is also called near-sightedness.
CONCAVE LENS
▶ Use of concave lens in cameras -
To improve the quality of
photographs, combinations of
convex and concave lenses are
widely used by camera
manufacturers. When only a
convex lens is used as the primary
lens of a camera, it causes
distortions in the photos, which is
called chromatic aberrations.
Combining both concave and
convex lens eliminated the
undesirable effects.
CONCAVE LENS

▶ Concave lens used in peepholes

- Peepholes or door viewers are
security devices that give a
panoramic view of objects
outside walls or doors. A
concave lens is used to minimize
the proportions of the objects
and gives a wider view of the
object or area.
