This document provides a detailed lesson plan format for teaching how rocks turn into soil. The lesson plan aims to help students identify the forces that break down rocks and describe how rocks are broken down. It includes objectives, content, learning resources, introductory activities watching a video on weathering, group activities analyzing how weathering breaks rocks into smaller pieces, analysis and application questions, assessment through a quiz, and assignment to create a poster illustrating the natural process of rocks turning into soil.

Rocks near the Earth's surface undergo changes by weathering .

Weathering refers to the group of destructive forces that changes the
physical and chemical character of rock near the earth's surface.
Mechanical weathering or physical disintegration is the breaking down of
rocks into smaller pieces. The change in the rock is physical with little or no chemical
Key Concepts /

Developed
Chemical weathering is the decomposition of rock from exposure to water
and atmospheric gases ( principally carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water vapor ). As
rock is decomposed by these agents, new chemical compounds form. Examples of
chemical weathering include: rusting, acid breakdown, and solution weathering.

Analysis

Question:
1. What force that changes the physical and chemical character of rocks?
2. How does natural process break down rocks into soil?

Possible Answers:

1. Weathering
2. Overtime natural forces break down large rock deposits into smaller fragments, eventually reducing solid stone
to gravel and smaller particles This process occurs in multiple stages, and it can take an extremely
long time, depending on environmental conditions. The process may begin deep underground but
once a deposit of rock is exposed to the elements, the process may accelerate.
