The document is an exam for an Operations Research course consisting of two parts. Part A contains short answer questions about topics like defining Operations Research, summarizing jobs through machines, replacing deteriorating items, and the dominance principle in game theory. Part B contains longer word problems about topics like transportation models, equipment replacement analysis, economic order quantity models, and dynamic programming. Students are asked to solve problems, classify models, and explain concepts from the Operations Research subject area.

III B. Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, February-2022

OPERATIONS RESEARCH
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A
3. Answer any FOUR Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A (14 Marks)
1. a) Define Operations research. [2M]
b) Summarize n jobs through two machines. [2M]
c) Outline the replacement of items that deteriorate with time. [2M]
d) Explain dominance principle in game theory. [3M]
e) Label VED analysis in brief. [3M]
f) What is Bellman’s principle of optimality? [2M]
PART –B (56 Marks)
2. a) Classify various types of operation research models and explain [10M]
its applications.
b) Outline duality principle in detail. [4M]
3. There are three parties who supply the following quantities of [14M]
coal and three consumers who require the coal as follows:
Party 1 : 14 tons Consumer A : 6 tons
Party 2 : 12 tons Consumer B : 10 tons
Party 3 : 5 tons Consumer C : 15 tons
The cost matrix is as shown below :
A B C
1 6 8 4
2 4 9 3
3 1 2 6
Find the schedule of a transportation policy which minimizes
the cost.
4. a) The cost of a new machine is Rs.5000. The maintenance cost of [7M]
nth year is given by Rn = 500(n-1); n = 1, 2.... . Assuming that
the money value will not change with time, after how many
years will it be economical to replace the machine by new one?
b) A pipeline is due for repairs. It will cost Rs.10,000 and last for 3 [7M]
years. Alternatively, a new pipeline can be laid at a cost of
Rs.30,000 and lasts for 10 years. Assuming cost of capital to be
10% and ignoring salvage value, which alternative should be
chosen?
5. a) A repairman is to be hired to repair machines which breakdown [10M]
at an average rate of 3/hour. The breakdowns follow Poisson
distribution. Non-productive time of a machine is considered to
cost Rs. 10 per hour. Two repairmen have been interviewed- one
is slow but cheap, while the other is fast but expensive. The slow
repairman charges Rs. 5 per hour and the services broken-down
machines at the rate of 4 per hour. The fast repairman demands
Rs.7 per hour and the services at an average rate of 6 per hour.
Which repairman should be hired?
b) Illustrate mini. max (max. mini) criterion and optimal strategy? [4M]
6. a) An automobile factory manufactures a particular type of gear [7M]
within factory. This gear is used in the final assembly. The
particulars of this gear are: demand rate = 14000 units/year,
production rate = 35,000 units/year, set-up cost, Co = Rs.500
per set-up and carrying cost, Cc= Rs.15/unit/year. Find EOQ
and Cycle time.
b) Analyze stochastic models and demand may be discrete variable [7M]
or continuous variable?
7. a) Solve the following dynamic programming problem: [10M]
Maximize Z = 10X1+ 30X2.
Subject to 3x1+ 6x2 ≤ 168
12x2 ≤ 240
x1 and x2 ≥ 0
b) Explain various simulation languages in brief. [4M]
