RESEARCH TOOLS
Research:
Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge Or the use of existing knowledge in a new
and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This
could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it leads to new and
creative outcomes.

Research tools:
Research tools refer to the devices or instruments used to collect data, such as a paper
questionnaire or computer-assisted interviewing system. They are used to measure a variable,
or to collect the information needed to answer a research question. Careful selection of
research tools can help the researcher achieve goals and save time.

Questionnaire:
A questionnaire is a list of questions or items used to gather data from respondents about their
attitudes, experiences, or opinions. Questionnaires can be used to collect quantitative and/or
qualitative information. Questionnaires are commonly used in market research as well as in the
social and health sciences.

Interviews:
An interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions in order to collect
data. Interviews involve two or more people, one of whom is the interviewer asking the
questions. There are several types of interviews, often differentiated by their level of structure.

• Structured interviews.
• Unstructured interviews.
• Semi-structured interviews.
• Focused group discussion:
A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is a qualitative research method and data collection technique
in which a selected group of people discusses a given topic or issue in-depth, facilitated by a
professional, external moderator.

Observation:
A way to gather data by watching people, events, or noting physical characteristics in their
natural setting.

Test:
Test and Instruments are types of Measurement tools, and they are used by researchers and
practitioners to aid in the assessment or evaluation of research participants, clients, or patients.
The tools are used to measure or collect data on a variety of variables, depending on the
research questions.
