Qs and Ans On An Introduction To Material Science

This homework assignment for a materials science and engineering course contains two problems assessing polymer concepts. Problem 1 asks about bond strengths in polymers and the differences between homopolymers and copolymers. Problem 2 distinguishes between thermoplastic and thermoset polymers and requires calculating number average molecular weight, weight average molecular weight, and number-average degree of polymerization from a given molecular weight distribution table, though not enough information is provided to calculate the last value.

Problem #1

a) b)

1. What bonds are contained in the polymer structure above, compare

which one has the strongest bond. (5 points) (Not clear what is
required)
Ans: The above compound is Butane. The bond between the carbons atoms
( C – C ) is stronger than the bond between the carbon atom and
hydrogen atom ( C – H ).

2. What is the difference between homopolymer and co-polymers. Give

examples and sketch the repeat unit structure of each those polymers.
(5 points)

Ans: Homopolymer is a chain of a repeated units with same type.

Copolymer is a chain of different repeated units.

Problem #2

1. What is the difference between thermoset and thermoplastic polymer.

(2 points)

Ans:

Thermoplastic Thermosets
Could be reshaped with heat These polymers non-reversibly
treatment harden during formation
Process of softening and hardening is Covalent cross links are formed
reversible between adjacent molecules upon
heating
Secondary bonds break at increased Thermosets are generally harder and
temperature stronger than thermoplastics
Most linear polymers and some Most crosslinked and network
branched polymers are polymers
thermoplastics

2. The molecular weight distribution of a polymer is shown in the below

table. (8 points)

The number-average molecular weight is expressed as M n = ∑ x i M i

A weight-average molecular weight M w is calculated according to M w = ∑ wi M i

a. Calculate the number average molecular weight.

Ans: M n = ∑ x i M i = (0.04*20000) + (0.07*37500) + (0.16*52500) + (0.26*67500) +

(0.24*82500) + (0.12*97500) + (0.08*112500) + (0.03*127500) = 73700 g/mol

b. Calculate the weight average molecular weight.

Ans: M w = ∑ wi M i = (0.01*20000) + (0.04*37500) + (0.11*52500) + (0.24*67500) +

(0.27*82500) + (0.16*97500) + (0.12*112500) + (0.05*127500) = 81425 g/mol

c. Calculate the number-average degree of polymerization?

Mn 73700
Ans: DP = m = m
