This document summarizes two activities conducted as part of a Social Connect and Responsibility program - a heritage walk and crafts corner. The heritage walk took students to Bangalore Palace to learn about its history and architecture. Built in the 19th century, the palace reflects Tudor style and has 35 rooms, courtyards, and gardens spread over 454 acres. The crafts corner taught students about terracotta jewelry, its origins in ancient civilizations, cultural significance, and versatile designs made from clay. Both activities provided enriching experiences for students to connect with history, culture and creativity.

Heritage walks and craft corners are two distinct yet complementary avenues that offer
individuals unique opportunities to connect creativity. Both activities provides enriching
experience. Heritage of a city communicates the history of that place.Heritage walk is a tool to
explore the unexplored and neglected richness of the country.

Bangalore Palace is a 19th century royal palace located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, in an
area that was owned by the Rev. John Garrett, the first principal of the Central High School in
Bangalore, now famous as Central College. The commencement of the construction of the palace
is attributed to him.

SCR ACTIVITY

April 1874 marked the beginning of the construction of the palace. John Cameron, the
artistic mind behind Lalbagh took the responsibility of landscaping. During 1878 AD the initial
construction got completed. Following the initial completion, subsequent years called for many
additions and improvements. Maharaja Jayachamaraja during his reign added portions outside the
Darbar Hall. Renovations took place so that the Palace could have an essence of Windsor Castle
of London that had bestowed the king.

The ownership of the Bangalore Palace has gone through many legal activities. Presently,
it is under the ownership of the descendant of the Mysore Royal Family, Srikanta Datta
Narasimharaja Wadiyar. The palace opened its doors to the public in 2005.

The palace reflects the Tudor style of architecture. Its complex, along with the garden,
spreads over an area of 454 acres. The interior of the palace finds motifs, cornices, and wooden
carvings on it. Many physical elements inside are the imports from Britain. A gift from the British
to the Wadiyars, the coat of arms is painted on the wall in red and white colour. It consists of
mythological impressions and intricate floral design. In the centre is Ganda Bherunda, a
mythological two-headed bird while the other side has a mythological animal with features of the
head of both the elephant and lion, symbolising royalty and power.

SCR ACTIVITY

Some of the eye popping features of the two-level granite palace include the fortified towers, the
turreted walls, palace grounds, ballroom and other architectural elements of Tudor and Scottish
buildings. Roman arches greet its visitors at the entrance. The ceiling is decorated with relief paintings
and the furniture inside the palace has a touch of Victorian, neo-classical and Edwardian styles. There
are 35 rooms in the palace and an open courtyard on the ground floor consisting of granite seats
decorated with fluorescent blue ceramic tiles.

Durbar Hall
The magnificent hall is a central attraction for the visitors. A notable highlight of the palace, it was used
to accommodate royal gatherings during the Wadiyars. The hall is decorated with sumptuous floral
motifs and stained glass windows.

Gardens and Courtyards

The Bangalore Palace's gardens and courtyards are among India's most well-maintained gardens.
Visitors can take leisurely strolls on the grass, having the imposing effect of the castle by their
side all the while.

S CRAFT CORNER
Terracotta jewellery is a form of adornment made from clay, and it has been used for centuries
by different cultures all over the world. Its appeal lies in its simplicity and earthy aesthetic, which makes
it a popular choice for people who value handmade and natural jewellery. As a fashion enthusiast and
lover of culture, I have always been fascinated by the history and cultural significance of terracotta
jewellery. In this article, I will explore the origins of this jewellery, its cultural significance in different
parts of the world, and the various designs and styles that make it a unique and versatile accessory.

Terracotta jewellery has a rich history that dates back to ancient civilizations. From India to
Egypt, this jewellery has been used for different purposes, ranging from religious ceremonies to social
events. In some cultures, it was believed that wearing terracotta jewellery could bring good fortune,
ward off evil spirits, and even promote fertility. Understanding the cultural significance of terracotta
jewellery provides insights into the beliefs, values, and lifestyles of different communities.

The art of terracotta jewellery making has evolved over time, and new techniques have been
introduced to make the jewellery more durable and long-lasting. In addition to using locally available
clay, other materials like glass, stones, and beads are now used to decorate the jewellery. The jewellery
is also now painted with natural dyes and coated with varnish to make it more resistant to wear and tear.
