Construction methods
encompass the techniques and
processes that are utilized in the
construction process. The
construction method plays an
integral part for civil engineers
since it can help to successfully
achieve the desired output if the
methods are used properly.
 01 Foundation

Foundations provide support for structures by

transferring their loads into the layers of soil
underneath it. Foundations must have adequate
bearing capacity and suitable settlement properties
so that the structure will be safe.
 02 Formwork

According to Designing Buildings Wiki

(2021), formwork is a process used of
creating a temporary mould into which
concrete is poured and formed.
Traditionally, formwork is manufactured
using timber.
 03 Masonry
Construction
According to Muresan (2021), masonry
consists of building structures from
single units that are laid and bound
together with mortar. Materials such as
bricks, stone and concrete blocks are
the most common materials used in
masonry construction.
 04 Platform Framing
with Wood
Platform framing uses individual pieces of
dimensional lumber which are assembled
piece by piece to form the frame of a
structure. With this building method, the
platform is built first and then followed by
the walls of the first level of the home.
05 Light Gauge Steel
Framing
Light gauge steel construction is very
similar to wood framed construction in
principle - the wooden framing
members are replaced with thin steel
sections.

Structural steel framing is a durable,

refers to building frame systems
where the vertical and horizontal
structural elements are formed by a
system of structural steel beams and
columns.

Construction
Concrete frame construction is a
construction method which comprises a
network of columns and beams to
transfer the loads coming onto the
structure to the foundation successfully.
09 Pre-Engineering
Construction
A pre-engineered building (PEB) is
designed by a PEB supplier or PEB
manufacturer with a single design to
be fabricated using various materials
and methods to satisfy a wide range
of structural and aesthetic design
requirements.

(MMC) are innovative building
construction techniques used by
construction professionals that
streamline the construction process.
From comprehensive digital design
to prefabricated building
components, modern construction
methods help lower costs and
reduce construction time while
driving sustainability.
Flat Slab
Construction
● This method uses flat slabs of
concrete reinforced with concrete
columns. Flat slab construction is a
method that eliminates the need for
support beams and offers flexibility
in the layout of the structure since
there are no restrictions on height
between floors. As with many
modern building techniques, flat slab
construction reduces overall time
needed for installation and
construction.
Timber Frames
● A timber frame is a load-bearing
wooden structure, held together with
mortise and tenon joinery. Post and
beam building is similar to timber
framing, but in lieu of wooden joints,
post and beam buildings are held
together with bolts and other steel
connections.
Thin Joint
Masonry
● The thin joint masonry building
technique helps to reduce build
times by lowering the amount of
mortar needed to construct
structural walls. Using a special
adhesive mortar, large-format
concrete blocks can be layered
much faster while lowering waste
and cutting costs for required
construction materials.
3D Volumetric
Construction
● In 3D volumetric construction, three-
dimensional units are produced in a
specialized facility and then
transported to relevant job sites for
assembly. 3D modules can be made
with varying degrees of complexity.
Some units may be a bare structure
while others can come with external
finishes and internal features already
installed.
Raised Access
Flooring
● Raised access flooring is a modular
construction method that uses
modular floor panels installed over
an existing floor surface. The raised
floor panels are suspended over the
existing floor to create empty space
that can be used to channel
plumbing, electrical wiring, or HVAC
systems rather than installing them
in ceiling space. Repairs and
maintenance can be much more
easily performed through raised
access floor panels compared to
overhead systems.
