Lesson Plan 1 - Circulatory System-Pedroso

The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. It transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. The heart pumps blood through a network of arteries and veins. It has four chambers - two upper atria and two lower ventricles. The circulatory system is divided into pulmonary and systemic circulation loops centered around the heart. Blood vessels include arteries, which carry blood away from the heart, veins, which carry blood toward the heart, and capillaries, which connect arteries and veins and allow for exchange of materials with body tissues. Blood contains plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The circulatory system provides all body tissues with the nutrients and oxygen

process of circulation includes the intake of metabolic
materials, the conveyance of these materials
throughout the organism, and the return of harmful by-
products to the environment.

Parts and Functions of Circulatory System

These key parts of your circulatory system maintain

blood flow to your body so you can survive:

Heart
- It is a muscular organ with four chamber containing

two atria (left and right atrium) and two ventricles.

- It pumps blood through the network of arteries and irculatory-system/
veins.

Structure of the Heart

▪ The heart is a muscle about the size of a fist, and

is roughly cone-shaped. It is about 12cm long,
9cm across the broadest point and about 6cm
thick. The pericardium is a fibrous covering which
wraps around the whole heart. It holds the heart
in place but allows it to move as it beats. The wall
of the heart itself is made up of a special type of
muscle called cardiac muscle.

Chambers of Heart
The heart has two sides, the right side and
the left side each have two chambers, a top
chamber and a bottom chamber. The top
chamber is called atria and bottom chamber is
called ventricles.
▪ The Atria (atrium) receive blood from different
sources. The left atrium receives blood from the
lungs and the right atrium receives blood from the
rest of the body.
▪ The Ventricles pump blood out to different parts
of the body. The right ventricle pumps blood to
the lungs while the left ventricle pumps out blood
to the rest of the body. The ventricles have much
thicker walls than the atria which allows them to
perform more work by pumping out blood to the
whole body.

Blood Vessels

- Blood Vessel are tubes which carry blood. There are

two major types of blood vessel, the veins and
arteries.

Types of Blood Vessels

▪ Vein: A vein is a blood vessel that drains blood

away from the heart again, such as in the legs. s/heart.html
▪ Artery: An artery is a blood vessel that carries
blood away from the heart. It is part of the
cardiovascular system. It has a thicker, more
muscular wall than a vein to cope with the extra
pressure from the force of the heart’s pumping.
▪ Capillaries: An extremely narrow blood vessel,
which form networks in most tissues. Blood runs
through capillaries to supply the body’s tissues.

blood vessels through the
body, with the arteries
represented in red and
the veins in blue. This is
the case with real blood,
as arterial blood is usually
bright red in color
because of the large
amount of oxygen it
carries, while venous
blood is darker and more
blue/purple. The blood
drawn for routine tests is
often from the veins.

Blood
- Blood is a fluid which contains the oxygen and
nutrients the body needs and carries the wastes
which need to be removed.

Types of Blood Cells

- Plasma. The liquid component of blood is called
plasma, a mixture of water, sugar, fat, protein, and
salts. The main job of the plasma is to transport
blood cells throughout your body along with Hematology Glossary. (n.d.).

- Red Blood Cell. A round with a flattish, indented
center, like doughnuts without a hole. Red blood
cells carry fresh oxygen throughout the body.

- White Blood Cell. It also called leukocyte or white

corpuscle, a cellular component of the blood that
lacks hemoglobin, has a nucleus, is capable of
motility, and defends the body against infection
and disease by ingesting foreign materials and
cellular debris, by destroying infectious agents
and cancer cells, or by producing antibodies.

- Platelets (also called thrombocytes). Unlike red

and white blood cells, platelets are not actually cells
but rather small fragments of cells. Platelets help the
blood clotting process (or coagulation) by gathering
at the site of an injury, sticking to the lining of the
injured blood vessel, and forming a platform on
which blood coagulation can occur. This results in
the formation of a fibrin clot, which covers the wound
and prevents blood from leaking out. Fibrin also
forms the initial scaffolding upon which new tissue
forms, thus promoting healing.
