 JJM can help avoid approximately 14 million DALYs associated with diarrhoea and save
around USD 101 billion and 66.6 million hours every day of time that would otherwise
have been spent — predominantly by women — collecting water.
 A DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health and are a way to
account for the years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLLs) and the years lived with a
disability (YLDs), due to prevalent cases of a disease or a health condition, in a population.

About: Jal Jeevan Mission

 It comes under Jal Shakti Ministry.
Aims:
 The mission ensures functionality of existing water supply systems and water
connections, water quality monitoring and testing as well as sustainable agriculture.
 It also ensures conjunctive use of conserved water; drinking water source
augmentation, drinking water supply system, grey water treatment and its reuse.
Implementation:

Southeast.
 During that time, the major export items from here were diamonds, spices, turmeric, muslin

settled there for hundreds of years. The Britishers mainly lived in Rangrez palem, the land of
Rangrezulus or people who used to dye clothes. The Muslim population called it Angrezulu.
With the entry of the British, over time, it came to be known as English Palem. This name
exists till date, though no Brit lives here now.
 Another locality is Robertsonpeta named after a European by name Robertson. In 1816, he

1. AP TO PURCHASE 5 LAKH METRIC TONNE OF BONDALU VARIETY OF PADDY
 The AP government, which discouraged the cultivation of the Bondalu variety (MTU-3626)
of paddy for the past six to seven years, is ready this season to buy the variety from
farmers to an extent of 5 lakh metric tonne. This, after the central government gave its nod
for procurement.
 By the time of Kharif season, an indication had been given by the YSRC government to
farmers that Bondalu variety would be procured on a large scale. Farmers in Kakinada,
Konaseema and East Godavari district have cultivated Bondalu variety in 2 lakh acres. The
per-acre yield is expected to be some 55 bagfull.
 This variety of paddy used to be grown on a large scale in the second crop. This is a boiled
variety and rice millers used to purchase it at higher prices, paying more than the MSP.
Notably, this has a high demand in Kerala. But in Kerala and to an extent in Tamil Nadu too,
the farmers are growing the same variety. The prices of paddy in AP remained high. As a
result, Tamil Nadu rice millers and traders reduced the quantity of their purchases.

government discouraged the cultivation of paddy in the last five to six years.
