Cable - Is a medium which information usually moves from one network
C. ABSTRACTION device to another.
(Time Frame: 10
minutes) Classification of network cable:
Coaxial Cable - have a single copper conductor at its center. A plastic layer
provides insulation between the center conductor and a braided metal
shield.
Fiber Optic Cable - Consist of a center glass core surrounded by several
layers of protective materials.
Twisted Pair - Is a type of wire in which the two conductor of a single circuit
are twisted together.
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable - Has a metal foil or braided mesh
covering each pair of insulated conductor.
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable – the most common used Ethernet
cable cause it is very cheap and easy to install
Two Type of Ethernet cable color code:
Straight Through – It is used to connect different computer devices such as
PC to Modem, PC to Switch, Router to Switch or PC to Server.
• T-568A – White Green, Green, White Orange, Blue, White Blue,
Orange, White Brown, Brown
• T568B – White Orange, Orange, White Green, Blue, White Blue,
Green, White Brown, Brown.
Crossover – It is used to connect same computer devices such as PC to PC,
Switch to Switch, and Router to Router.
Tools and Materials Needed to Wire Ethernet cable: UTP Cable, RJ45,
Crimping Tool and LAN/Cable Tester Steps and Procedure on how to wire
Ethernet cable:
❖ Strip off about 2 inches of the cable sheath.
❖ Untwist the pairs - don't untwist them beyond what you have exposed
❖ Align the colored wires according to the diagrams above.
❖ Trim all the wires to the same length, about 1/2" to 3/4" left exposed
from the sheath.
❖ Insert the wires into the RJ45 end - make sure each wire is fully
inserted to the front of the RJ45 end and in the correct order.
❖ Verify the wires ended up the right order and that the wires extend to
the front of the RJ45 end and make good contact with the metal contacts in
the RJ45 end.
❖ Crimp the RJ45 end with the crimper tool
❖ Cut the cable to length - make sure it is more than long enough for
your needs
❖ Repeat the above steps for the second RJ45 end.
❖ Use a cable tester to verify the proper connectivity of the cable.
Safety Precaution
❖ Avoid Hoarse Playing
❖ Use the tool properly
❖ Always be on task
❖ Be Vigilant
❖ Follow OH&S procedure and 5’s

(Time Frame: 20 cable by following the steps in crimping the Ethernet cable for 15
minutes)
