MODULE SUMMARY

Module outline and aims

The aim of this module is to provide you with the fundamental tools to use the Microsoft
Office Suite effectively.

The module will familiarise you with the various Microsoft Office packages, their relative
strengths and therefore which one to use to solve the problem at hand. This will enable you
to work efficiently through all your modules on the programme.

As the Microsoft Office Suite remains the dominant office package in the workplace, the skills
you obtain here will increase your employability both during your degree (work placement,
summer internship) and upon graduation.

Excel: Managing the Worksheet Environment; Creating Cell Data; Formatting Cells and
Worksheets; Managing Worksheets and Workbooks; Applying Formulas and Functions;

On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to:

 Understand the basic to intermediate functions of the Microsoft Office Suite.
 Understand how to determine the most appropriate solution to the problem at hand.

 Construct a robust and understandable spreadsheet.
 Construct a well-designed and presented document in Word.
 Build, maintain and interrogate a database.
 Design a presentation that informs the intended audience.

 Understand the needs of other users when designing and maintaining Office
documents
 Demonstrate an appreciation of ethical issues as they relate to both the subject
matter and the wider business world.

HOW WILL I LEARN?

This course is delivered through an online learning package, supplemented by weekly


support labs during which your progress will be monitored and you will have an
opportunity to undertake set tasks you will have prepared for and raise any technical
questions.

This module is assessed by Coursework only. The coursework will take the form of five
on line submissions each worth 20% of the final mark.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria are descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes you need to

Criteria are descriptions of the skills, knowledge or attributes you need to demonstrate to
achieve a certain grade or mark in an assessment. Assessment Criteria and Grade-

Feedback on assessment

Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the
University’s Assessment Regulations and Policy. More information on the timing and
type of feedback that will be provided for each assessment will be available from the
module leader.

Assessment Regulations

The Pass mark for the module is 50%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific
assessments are listed in the table above. The weighting of the different components
