Title of the Activity: Writing Resume/Curriculum Vitae

Learning Competency: Distinguishes between and among patterns of development in writing
across disciplines.

Objective: Identify the format of a resume/ curriculum vitae

Brief Introduction:
Your resume shows the employer how and why you are qualified for the job, and you will want to
present your skills and experience in a way that will have the most chance of getting you selected for an
interview.

Let’s Recall
A résumé or resume is a document created and used by a person to present their background, skills, and
accomplishments. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure
new employment. A typical résumé contains a "summary" of relevant job experience and education.

Let’s Find-out
A resume, sometimes called a CV or curriculum vitae, is a document that lists your work experience,
education, skills and achievements. You'll need a resume for almost any job application.

Let’s Understand:
How is a CV or curriculum vitae different than a resume?
The CV presents a full history of your academic credentials, so the length of the document is variable. In
contrast, a resume presents a concise picture of your skills and qualifications for a specific position, so
length tends to be shorter and dictated by years of experience (generally 1-2 pages

• Resume
• Emphasizes skills
• Used when applying for a position in industry, non-profit, and public sector
§ Is no longer than 2 pages, with an additional page for publications and/or poster
presentations if highly relevant to the job
§ After 1 year of industry experience, lead with work experience and place education
section at the or near the end, depending upon qualifications
CV
• Emphasizes academic accomplishments
• used when applying for positions in academia, fellowships and grants
§ Length depends upon experience and includes a complete list of publications, posters,
and presentations
§ Always begins with education and can include name of advisor and dissertation title or
summary (see examples). Also used for merit/tenure review and sabbatical leave

*The most typical format of resume is the chronological resume

The chronological resume format is most commonly used. It lists your work history in reverse chronological
order (with your most recent work history listed at the top).
The following section details the categories that normally appear in a chronological order.
1. Heading –includes your full name, address, phone numbers, e-mail.
2. Objective – informs the specific purpose of your resume, such as application for a job. T make it specific, focus on the
audience’s needs, and concise.
3. Education- The list of schools you have attended. You may include your class rank, average or honors/advanced courses
you may have taken, if these are noteworthy.
4. Honors and awards. Lists of academic and extracurricular recognition you may have received. It give the reader a short
description of the award and tells the reader when you won it.
5. School activities- This enumerates school activities including clubs, class project, sports, etc.
6. Work experience- Any work experience you may had, include your job title, name of company, dates of employment
and tour specific duty .
List the most recent employment role first and from there work backward.
7. Enrichment activities- his details any projects, skills, programs, hobbies or experience.
8. References- A character reference, also called a personal reference, is a letter recommending your personality, integrity
and skills often provided by someone who knows you outside of a work environment.

Resume Layout & Formatting

1.The first rule of layout is, keep it clean and clear. Again, remember, you get 10-20 seconds to catch a hiring manager’s
eye so handing in something that’s messy, unorganized or confusing is going to end up in the trash.
2.Margins – Keep your margins to ½ to 1 inch on all sides of the paper, especially if you’re sending your resume to anyone
you think might print it out.
3.Font Size – With the exception of your name which can be larger, you want to keep your font size at between 10 and 12
point. Keep in mind that some fonts are larger and/or smaller than others so an Arial 12 is larger than a Times New Roman
12. Ideally you want your resume to be a single page so feel free to tweak your font size a bit to make it fit.
4.Paper – If you’re printing out your resume make sure to use a laser printer or inkjet printer that produces high-quality
results. Use off-white, ivory or bright white paper and always stick to the standard 8 ½ X 11 paper in the highest quality you
can afford.
5.Spacing – Generally single spacing works the best, with a blank line between each section of content.
