Construction Equipment and Plant Management

(COTM 4163)

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
 Efficient and effective implementation of construction projects
require good knowledge of relationships for and among resources
Materials, Money, Manpower and Machineries (the 4
M’s) in most literatures,
The Major Resources in Construction :
• Institutional: (Management and Production Systems)
• Finance (Money): (The major resource used to secure other
resources )
• Human: (capacity and capability):
• Physical: (Material, Equipment & Plant):
• Information (Network): (Availability &access
• Time and space: (availability and utilization )
 Equipments (Plant) as resources play a major role in all
construction activities.

1.1. Construction Industry
 Construction Industry is an industry involved in the planning,
execution and evaluation of all types of civil works.
 Construction Industry can be categorized into four major
sectors:
1. Building Construction Projects: residential and
commercial complexes, educational and recreational
facilities, hospitals and hotels, warehouse and marketing
facilities;
2. Infrastructure Construction Projects: heavy
constructions, equipment-oriented works include
dams and canals, highways and airports, railways and
bridges, large water supply and sewage disposal
networks, and specialist construction activities which

3. Industrial Construction Projects: power
generation, manufacturing, processing and industrial plants
like nuclear and thermal power plants, steel mills, petroleum
refineries, and etc
4. Special-Purpose Projects: environmental works,
emergencies, remedial works, installation and commissioning
of equipment, and complex key operations.
 The execution of construction activities may be defined as
economic and social activities engaged in producing,
assembling, installing for either new or existing physical
infrastructures.
 The use of Labor Intensive and Construction On-Site dominated
the way how construction executions are carried out. As a result,
Construction Works can more represent the case of construction
activities in the case of least developing countries than
Construction Services.

CONT…
 In both cases, the need to master the different alternatives of
Construction Technology and Management approaches are
useful,
Construction Technology and Management
 The term technology in construction referred to the way how
either the materials or the elements or the entire product of any
construction works / services is designed and produced, while
 The management is dealing with the systems how relationships
among stakeholders, resources and activities are planned,
implemented and monitored for a successful completion of any
construction works or activities,
 Construction Managements is defined as the management in
which groups of people of different categories work together,
to execute the project economically without affecting the
quality in a well planned and organized manner.

Why Construction Technology and Management Professionals?
 Construction Project Management is to coordinate and
administer all components including the technology and safety and
health requirements in order to successfully accomplish ,
 Construction Technology and Management Professionals are
those who could oversee the overall processes of construction
projects from their inception to their use and disposal stages,

Construction Process (Core and Supporting Processes)

 The construction process is defined as all processes which guides
towards or is a presupposition for the planned construction works
or services,
 This means that the construction process as a concept covers two
main sub processes having different characteristics.

These sub processes are:
1. Core processes, and
2. Facilitating or Supporting processes.

The horizontal axis shows the three columns three major Project
Management phases or cycles:
Project Definition: Project Identification & Basic Planning
Project Implementation : Project Design & Construction
Project Completion Processes: Project Product transfer
The vertical axis shows the two rows:
 Core and
Facilitating or Supporting Processes

Resources For Construction Industry
Resource
 A Construction project involves largely Human (Capacity and
Capability), Financial, Physical (Material, Equipment and Plant),
Institutional (Management and Production Systems), and
Information (Access and Availability) resources together with
the concepts of availability and utilization of Time and Space.
 The integration of technology and management of each
individual resource and their combined outcomes are necessary
for the successful completion of a construction work or service
 In this respect, while construction technology deals with how
the equipment technology can be upgraded, skilled manpower
are trained to use these equipments and plants and enhancing
their production processes;
 construction management deals with selecting types of
equipments such that their combination with other resources

yield the optimum production.
Efficiency in Construction Equipment
 Equipments or Plants are designed to replace human resources
where repeated activities are mostly applicable to increase
productivity or efficiency.
 Productivity or efficiency can be defined as the ratio of output
to input.
 In addition, time could be saved to decrease the production time
where time value of money can contribute to the benefit of a
completed project.
 Therefore, while construction technology deals with the way
how best you can replace the human labor with technological
advancement to create or upgrade construction equipments or
plants together with their usage by skilled manpower;
 construction management focuses on relationship management
among different types of resources, stakeholders and activities
with regard to their planning, implementation and monitoring

productivity. 9
Equipment Quality in Construction Projects

 Use of Construction equipments and plants often give a

harmonized and standardized output against variations of
quality that could be achieved among different skilled manpower.
 use of equipment and plants increased the quality of materials,
components and the whole product of a construction process.

Equipment Mechanization on a Project

 The introduction of new mechanized equipment in construction
has had a profound effect on the cost and productivity of
construction as well as the methods used for construction itself;

17-Dec-23 By: Dugasa B (MSc.) 10

Advantages of Equipment Mechanization:

Use of appropriate equipment eliminates human errors and

ensures superior quality of work consistently
Speedy construction avoids time and cost overruns.
 Facility available for usage earlier. Certain construction not
possible by manual methods
Degree of Equipment Mechanization on a Project will depend on:
•Project size
•Quality requirements
•Speed of completion
•Availability of skilled and unskilled labor
•Economics

New technological developments initiated for the purpose of
physical infrastructure development through either:
 gaining recognition of scientific development (technological), or;
 enhancing human value and living condition demands (social), or;
 competitive or increasing productivity demands (economical), or;
 Strengthening or acquiring power and resources (political) that
involves construction equipments could be one reason why we
need to consider construction equipment management vital for the
discipline construction.
