Letter Writing

Letter- A letter is a written or printed communication, generally longer and

more formal than a note. It is usually sent to the recipient via mail or post in an
envelope. Any such message that is transferred via post is a letter, a written
conversation between two parties.
 Types of Letters
There are broadly two types of letter, namely
1. Informal letters and 2. Formal Letters.
1. Informal Letters: These are personal letters. They need to follow a set pattern
or adhere to certain formalities. They contain personal information or a written
conversation. Informal letters are generally written to friends, acquaintances,
relatives, etc.
2. Formal Letters: These letters follow a certain pattern and formality. They are
strictly kept professional in nature and directly address the issues concerned.
Letters to firms, businessmen, authorities, applications, to the Editors of
Newspapers, etc. fall under this category.

 Forms of Letter
1. The Indented form
2. The Blocked form
3. Semi-blocked form

1. The Indented Form:

It is a traditional form of writing letters.

I) First include your address (the name of the city or town is written last,
with the pin code) and then the date. This information should be
located at the top right hand side of the page right at the beginning of
the letter or at the bottom left hand side at the end of the letter.

II) Write the Salutation or a courteous greeting on the left side below the
address.
III) When writing a letter using Indented form, indent each paragraph.
IV) Write the Subscription below the last line of the letter on the right hand side
and below the Subscription do the Signature on the right hand side as well.

side corner of the letter. Each line of the address must not end with a comma.
b) The date is written below the address.

2. The Salutation:
a) It is a form of address or greeting.
b) It is written just below the address on the left hand side corner of the page.
c) Its choice depends on the degree of intimacy the writer has with the
addressee.
