ERGONOMICS & WORK SYSTEM DESIGN

Purpose :
Give knowledge and understanding about techniques design and perform measurement s i
stem work ( criterion time , criteria physiological , and psychological ) as gauge measuring
performance .

Definition of Industrial Engineering:
Industrial engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of
integrated system of people, materials, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon
specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences predict,
and evaluate the result to be obtained from such system

Integrated System meliputi sistem mikro sd makro

System work , its most micro
System production , is combined from a number of system work , covers existing parts _ in
something industry
System business , includes various type business , for example business in field
manufacturing , agriculture , services trade , etc
System macro industry , covers component industry in a manner comprehensive , for
example consumers , partners , competitors , government , etc

The production system can be defined as a series of activities required to process or change
a set of inputs . into a number of outputs that have added value value )
Work productivity is defined as the ratio (ratio) between output per input . By knowing the
value (index) of productivity, it will also be known the level of efficiency in the use of
inputs in a system

Factors - Factors that affect Productivity

Technical Factors: factors related to the better use and application of production facilities,
the application of more effective and efficient work methods, and or the use of more
economical raw materials
Human Factors: factors that have an influence on the efforts made by humans in completing
work that is their duty and responsibility . ( Ability & Motivation)

Fundamentals of Work Design/Research

Methods Engineering Work Design, Work Study or Job Design is an activity aimed at
learning principles and techniques to get the best work system design. These principles and
techniques are used to manage the components inside Work system

Definition of Work System

Work System : A unit composed _ on kom - ponen man with all properties , capabilities ,
and limitations , materials , machinery & equipment , and the environment work , For
reach level high efficiency & productivity , which is measured from time spent , energy
expended , and consequences _ psychological as well as the sociology it creates . (IZS)

Basic Elements in Occupational Research

• Thoughts towards efforts to achieve work efficiency ( Scientific Management )
• Thought to consider human behavior as a key element of the success of their work
endeavors

Background and Development

Frederick Winslow Taylor with His Time Measurement
(1856-1915)
• Taylor is seen as a major contribution in science (Not only Industrial Engineering but
also Management)
• He worked for a steel company as a supervisor,
• Time measurement
• Development of form/functional organizational structure
Frederick W. Taylor is the father of the Scientific era Management
• Develop knowledge for each element of work
• Train, teach and develop workers (work method)
• Ensuring the work method is in accordance with the objectives
• There is a separation between management and workers

Pioneer of Work Research Activities

Frank B. Gilberth (1868-1924)
• franks. B. Gilberth is a building contractor in the United States
• Seeing the inefficiency of the work movements of laying bricks.
• Generate a procedure for analyzing work movements and improving them
• The procedure is to divide working movements into basic movement elements that are
part of a movement.
