MOTIVATION LETTER
Date: January 26, 2024
As ONERA is expanding, I am eager to contribute to the ongoing research activities of the TRACES Doctoral Network. Given
my background in applied mathematics, programming, and prior research experience in fluid mechanics, I am confident
that my expertise aligns well with the project titled “Modelling of Heat and Mass Transfer over a Heated Evaporating Liquid
Film”. What excites me the most about this position is the Network’s international, interdisciplinary, and industry-focused
approach to research, training, and skill-building. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn both French
and Italian during the program, given that I will be spending a significant amount of time in France and Italy.
The accurate simulation of thermal anti-icing systems requires the use of multiple solvers, each dedicated to modeling a
specific phenomenon. Coupling these solvers together is crucial to ensure that the simulations are consistent and precise.
This is due to the complexity of the problem, which involves several factors, such as multiphase flow, heat and mass transfer,
and phase change. In the literature, both loose and tight coupling methods have been employed to address this issue, each
with its advantages and disadvantages. In this project, I aim to develop a a robust numerical methodology to strongly couple
heat and mass transfer phenomena in the boundary layer with the ice accretion solver and the heated airfoil solver.
I have always had a deep interest in mathematics, which led me to joining the National University of Sciences and Technol-
ogy (NUST), a premier institution of Pakistan, for my undergraduate studies. There, I took a diverse range of mathematical
courses, including analysis, algebra, and scientific computing. It was the applied mathematics courses, however, that piqued
my interest, especially fluid mechanics, numerical analysis, and differential equations. This interest led me to pursue a mas-
ter’s in mathematics, during which I conducted research in the field of fluid mechanics. In this time, I engaged in research
focused on the heat transfer analysis of nonlinear viscoelastic fluids in the von Karman setting. The outcomes of my re-
search have been published in renowned international journals, including the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry
and Scientific Reports.
Thereafter, I started working remotely with Prof. Emilie Sauret on developing a physics informed computational framework
to calibrate the Lattice Boltzmann Model parameters for multiphase flows. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure a visa to
travel to Australia due to COVID, which led to my scholarship offer expiring in January 2023. Nevertheless, working on this
project introduced me to the use of machine learning for fluid mechanics, and I took this opportunity to read the research
work of the Crunch group, who are leading researchers in this direction. Moreover, it has enabled me to gain extensive
knowledge and understanding of fluid flow problems across various scales, thereby enhancing my skills in this field.
In addition, I have previously served as a visiting faculty member at the National University of Computer and Emerging
Sciences. This role provided me with numerous opportunities to develop and refine my communication and interpersonal
skills by actively participating in faculty meetings and seminars. Given that effective communication is a crucial component
of success in research careers, this experience has proven to be invaluable.
In summary, I am a highly motivated applied mathematician who is eager to expand his knowledge and skills through en-
gaging and challenging projects. It is my aim to work with an organization that can serve as a mentor and facilitate the
development of my expertise. As such, I am excited to be considered for a position within the TRACES Doctoral Network and
to apply my analytical, numerical, and programming capabilities to advance the ongoing research efforts of TRACES. I would
welcome the opportunity to further explore how my background will make me a valuable addition to TRACES. Thank you!
Yours Faithfully
