The reproductive parts of angiosperms are located in a flower. The different parts of a flower
are sepals, petals, stamens and carpels. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive parts of a
flower which contain the germ - cells.
The flower may be unisexual (papaya, watermelon) when it contains either stamens or carpels
or bisexual (Hibiscus, mustard) when it contains both stamens and carpels. Stamen is the male
reproductive part and it produces pollen grains that are yellowish in colour. Carpel is present in
the centre of a flower and is the female reproductive part.

The flower may be unisexual when it contains either stamen or pistil or bisexual when it
contains both stamens and pistil. Stamen is the male reproductive part and it produces pollen
grains that often sticks to our hands if we touch the stamen of a flower. Pistil is the female
reproductive part.
After the pollen lands on a suitable stigma, it has to reach the female germ-cells which are in 5
the ovary. For this, a tube grows out of the pollen grain and travels through the style to reach
the ovary.

Shalu soaked a few seeds of Bengal gram (chana) and kept them overnight. Then she drained
the excess water and covered the seeds with a wet cloth and left them for a day.(She made
sure that the seeds do not become dry.) Then she cut open the seeds carefully. What she
observed is somewhat like the picture shown above. Based on this picture, answer the

The cuttings, layering and grafting are the traditional methods for the artificial propagation of
plants. For commercial purposes, they are being replaced by the modern methods of artificial
propagation of plants involving tissue culture. In tissue culture, they just put a few plant cells
(or plant tissue) in a growth medium with plant hormones in it and it grows into new plants.
56 The production of new plants from a small piece of plant tissue removed 1
from the growing tips of a plant in a suitable growth medium is called
( a) vegetative propogation ( b) tissue culture
( c) regeneration ( d) fragmentation
57 In tissue culture, the cells divide rapidly to form a small group of cells called 1
( a) cell group ( b) tissues
( c) callus
58 Using tissue culture, many plants can be grown from one parent in disease- 1
free conditions. True or false ?
