DIFFERENTIATION OF LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS

The differential coefficient of logarithmic function 𝑙𝑛 𝑥 is given by:

𝑑 1
𝑥 (𝑙𝑛 𝑥) =
𝑑 𝑥
More generally, it may be shown that:

𝑑 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)
[ln 𝑓(𝑥)] = (1)
𝑑𝑥 𝑓(𝑥)

SAMPLE PROBLEM

PROBLEM (1).
𝑑𝑦
If 𝑦 = ln(3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 1) find 𝑑𝑥

SOLUTION (1).
𝑑 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)
Using 𝑑𝑥 [ln 𝑓(𝑥)] = 𝑓(𝑥)

Then,

𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 1

𝑓’(𝑥) = 6𝑥 + 2
𝑑𝑦 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)
=
𝑑𝑥 𝑓(𝑥)

𝑑𝑦 6𝑥 + 2
= 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 1 Answer.

PROBLEM (2).

If 𝑦 = ln(sin 3𝑥) find 𝑑𝑦/𝑑𝑥

SOLUTION (2).
𝑑 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)
Using 𝑑𝑥 [ln 𝑓(𝑥)] = 𝑓(𝑥)

Then,

𝑓(𝑥) = sin 3𝑥

𝑓’(𝑥) = 3 cos 3𝑥
𝑑𝑦 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)
=
𝑑𝑥 𝑓(𝑥)

𝑑𝑦 3 cos 3𝑥
=
𝑑𝑥 sin 3𝑥
