EXPERIMENT No. 2
SOIL SAMPLING, LABELING, AND STORAGE

I. OBJECTIVE
To collect, sort, label, and store soil samples for future laboratory tests.

II. DISCUSSION
Soil sampling is significant in determining various soil properties. The correct method of
collecting samples can lead to accurate results of soil properties and structure.

Storage of a sample, after it has been obtained, is important as the sampling itself. If the
storage procedures were not done properly, it will lead to changes in some of the geotechnical
properties of the samples especially if in-situ properties are needed.

Labelling of the sample is of equal importance for the benefit of easy identification and to
avoid confusion if different persons will do the sampling and testing of the soil sample. A good
filing system to a soil sample will result to a better control of acquiring data.

III. APPARATUS
1. Soil Auger
2. Spade or Shovel
3. Digging Tools
4. Moisture tight sample containers
5. Petrowax or Paraffin
IV. PROCEDURE
1. Clear the selected area from grass and vegetation where the samples are to be collected.
