STEF HARVEY

As a Filipino, what makes you love the Philippines more in a way

that you can proudly shout "That's my Country"?

BOKNOY

Imagine a warm summer evening at the beach with the sun going
down, painting the sky in beautiful colors. While you're
enjoying this breathtaking moment, you also hear music playing
in the background. I want to talk about how music and sunsets go
so well together and how they're a part of Filipino culture.
Sunset and music are two extraordinary aspects of our culture
and holds a special place in the hearts of Filipinos. These
aren't just everyday occurrences; they are the soul of the
Filipino people. I am going to tell you why these aspects are
special.
V - 5 - 12

First is the Rhythms of Filipino Music. Filipino music is a rich

masterpiece that came from different influences. This unique
blend creates a musical identity that resonates with people of
all generations. What makes it even more special is that it's
not just about melodies and tunes; it's about storytelling and
emotional expression. Music is a medium for sharing our stories
and emotions. It's the soundtrack to our lives. Most especially,
music plays a significant role in Filipino celebrations, be it
fiestas, weddings, or festivals. It has the power to bring
people together, creating an atmosphere of joy and unity.
Another aspect of our culture that makes me proud is the
Majestic Filipino Sunset. The Filipino sunset is special because
it's like a painting in the sky, with vibrant colors like red,
orange, and purple, forming a breathtaking backdrop. It
symbolizes the end of the day's hard work and the beginning of
rest and reflection. What's amazing is that it's not just
appreciated individually but often brings Filipino communities
together. Families and friends often gather on beaches or
rooftops, strengthening their bonds while admiring the beauty of
the setting sun. What makes the Filipino sunset and music even
more special is the way they come together, creating a symphony
of sights and sounds that is truly magical. This combination of
nature's beauty and musical artistry is a fantastic experience.
Stunning sunsets often inspire musicians to create songs and
compositions. They serve as an inspiration to love songs that
celebrate the Filipino spirit. This connection between the
sunset and music deepens the relationship between Filipinos and
the natural world around us.

So, to end my speech, the Filipino sunset and music represent

hope, unity, and the essence of Filipino culture. Their beauty
and the way they merge with our culture are what make them truly
V - 5 - 13

special. These elements will continue to be cherished by the

Filipino people for generations to come, connecting us to our
roots and our shared experiences. Thank you.

JANJAN

I can proudly say that sunsets in the Philippines are truly one
of the best. It’s extraordinary when you're at the beach. The
combination of salt air, the splashing of the waves and the
beautiful colors of the sky when it's setting down can bring
comfort to us. That’s the kind of sunset the Philippines has.

Many times when I have felt like my eyes are filled with worries
about life, I try to watch a sunset and suddenly my mood
changes. It’s a proven mood booster as studies show that sunset
cues special areas in the retina, which trigger the release of
serotonin. The sunset evokes emotions of tranquility and gives
my curious mind a new path to explore and teaches me to live in
the moment.

Sunsets in the Philippines are like a beautiful canvas, and each

day it paints a new portrait. It’s the same with life. We have
to draw our life's canvas. We have to learn each day to grow and
evolve. Apply the principle of expansion or growth to our own
life experiences. There can be no sunrise without a sunset and
in that sense one does not exist without the other. Similar to
that, there can be no joy without sorrow in our lives. When one
door is closed, another one opens for us. We have to find our
path and keep walking and experience everything that life throws
at us. Hence, we cannot control every experience. We can only
expand our horizons and learn from each experience. That’s when
our lives can become enriching.
V - 5 - 14

Beauty enriches life, making it more rewarding. One theory is

that appreciation for the beauty of nature is so powerful
because it’s instinctual rather than learned. There’s a natural
tendency to stop and stare at a breathtaking sunset. When you do
so, you’re likely to be caught up in the moment, and your mind
gets a break from fretting over the past or worrying about the
future. When we live in the moment we let go of our inner chaos
that stops us from expanding our mind and thinking beyond our
problems. Sunsets bring that sense of inner peace that we are
all seeking.

Watching sunset in your favorite place indeed gives you a sense

of comfort and serenity. And to me,that is how the sunset in the
Philippines, specifically Philippines, specifically Bantayan
Island makes me feel. And I can proudly brag the wonderful
sunsets of the Philippines to the rest of the world and say
“That’s my country”

JOJO

One thing that I can proudly brag and say “That’s my

Country”about my country is the beach. A beach is a special
place where the land meets the ocean. It's a stretch of land
made up of tiny pieces like sand, pebbles, or rocks, created by
the movement of the waves. Beaches can be big sandy areas or
places with small stones and rocks. They're like a meeting point
between the land and the sea, and they're found all around the
world. Beaches are where people go to swim, build sandcastles,
play games, or simply relax in the sun. They're also homes for
many different plants and animals that have adapted to live in
this dynamic environment. Overall, a beach is a wonderful
V - 5 - 15

natural spot where people and nature come together in a

beautiful way.

However, beaches today are facing a range of significant

challenges. One major issue is pollution, especially from
plastic waste, which harms both the environment and the
creatures that call the beach home. Erosion is also a big
concern, as rising sea levels and changing weather patterns wear
away the shoreline, affecting coastal communities and their
properties. Another problem is overcrowding, with too many
visitors putting strain on the natural resources and amenities
of the beach. Finally, there's the threat of extreme weather
events, like storms and hurricanes, which can cause significant
damage to beachfront areas. These problems highlight the urgent
need for responsible management and conservation efforts to
ensure that beaches remain enjoyable and sustainable for
generations to come.

Taking care of our beaches is not just a responsibility, but a

necessity, as they not only provide us with joy, entertainment,
and relaxation, but also serve as a crucial source of livelihood
for many, emphasizing the vital importance of preserving these
natural treasures for present and future generations.

ZORO

My love for the Philippines is rooted in the profound impact of

drag performance as a cultural force, challenging societal norms
and fostering acceptance. In a society often tethered to rigid
expectations, exemplified in "Drag Race Philippines," emerges as
a vibrant expression of self. It transcends mere entertainment;
it evolves into a powerful platform for breaking down barriers
and challenging preconceived notions about identity. The
V - 5 - 16

captivating performances witnessed in the show showcase raw,

unapologetic artistry that catalyzes social change.

When I witness Filipino drag artists, I can't help but feel

immense pride in my country. Their art holds profound meaning as
drag, an art form, symbolizes resilience and empowerment,
especially for the LGBTQ+ community. Growing up in a household
where I could not show who I am, I deeply connected with these
artists who transformed to pursue their passion. Drag allows
individuals to embrace their authentic selves boldly,
transcending gender norms and societal expectations. Watching
Drag Race Philippines, I proudly declare, "That's my country!"
Through this show, I discovered the empowering message in
"Sirena," once used to mock the LGBTQ+ community but now seen as
a symbol of unwavering determination. It has become an anthem of
resilience, transforming my perspective and inspiring me to
advocate for a society that celebrates diversity and acceptance.

In this dazzling realm of sequins and stilettos, Filipino drag

queens inspire us to champion self-acceptance and diversity.
They are role models for those who've felt they didn't fit in or
couldn't pursue their dreams. Our drag queens assert, "You can,
and you should!" Their artistry intertwines traditional Filipino
culture with a contemporary twist, crafting a beautiful tapestry
of identity. Reflecting on Filipino entertainment and the drag
queens gracing our stages, I can't help but stand tall and shout
with pride, "That's my country! A nation that believes in art
beyond gender, manifesting in diverse forms."

BUBOY

Growing up, I've been introduced to different kinds of

individuals and most of them served as molders that shaped up my
V - 5 - 17

character as a person. I've been surrounded by the kindest,

hardworking, lovely and lively people all throughout the course
of my lifetime. And with that, I firmly believe and I can attest
that the greatest asset of the Philippines are the one hundred
and seven million Filipinos.

Many are the characteristics that make Filipinos stand out but
the very one thing that captures my heart and is pinned in my
soul is the culture of being a hopeful dreamer. In the
Philippines, the word "dreamer" has no age limit. I've seen a
kid dreaming to become a pilot,a lady dreaming to become a
mother, and a grandmother dreaming to see her grand children
grow up. We also fuels the spirit of camaraderie by supporting
each other and igniting the enthusiasm of chasing each of our
dreams, no matter how hard the journey may become. Life doesn’t
come with a manual that would instruct us what to do in order to
achieve our goals but hey it gives us friends, family and dreams
that would remind us to keep going in life. And here I am now,
reminding each Filipino to continue on living a purposeful life,
have fun and move forward while chasing that dream of yours.

To sum it all up, here are the two phrases that I want every
Filipino to remember. First is a wonderful Filipino expression,
HIRAYA MANAWARI, which means that “may your dreams, wishes and
aspiration, come true”. The next one is a powerful word
"adelante" which reminds us to continue on moving forward. Do
not forget to show the world that you are a dreamer full of hope
and positive energy because that is the embodiment of being a
Filipino. And that is what makes me proud of the Philippines
because having such wonderful and kind people makes me shout out
loud "That's my Country".
