EDUCATION

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
-An integral part of educational program designed
to promote the optimum development of the
individual physically, mentally, socially, emotionally,
and spiritually.
Objectives of Physical Education

● Personal Responsibility - Individual need to become

ever more health concious. Responsible and informed
behaviors are the key to good health.

● Health benefits for all people - Lower socio-economic

conditions and poor health are often interrelated.
Extending the benefits of good health to all people is
crucial to the health of the nation.

● Health promotion and disease prevention - A shift from

treatment to preventive techniques will drastically cut-
health-care cost and help all people to achieve
a better quality of life.
Purposes of Physical Education
Below are the purpose of P.E. (Andin, 1988):
1. To develop optimum fitness and health of the individual so that he is capable of living
the good life and of contributing his maximum capacity to the attainment of goals of our
society.

2. To produce individuals who can contribute to the economic well-being through:

a) The improvement of punctuality, cooperation, reliability precision and accuracy and open
mindedness
b) proper emphasis on problem solving skills such that an individual can identify a problem
correctly and master the skills necessary or useful in school and in the business world

3. To train good leaders with moral integrity of the highest order and develop other desirable
traits necessary for effective group participation or group essential to our Society

4. To develop creativity and innovativeness inspired by an abiding faith in God and love of
country and fellowmen
Functions of Physical Education (Andin 1988)
1. Biologic Function – refers to the enhancement of the individuals growth and
development through body movement.
2. Integrative Function – refers to personality integration achieved through participation in
properly selected activities.
3. Social Function – refers to the individuals opportunity to acquire, impart, or transmit
desirable.
4. Social values and standards that are acceptable with the needs and ideals of society
Physical Fitness
-Physical Fitness is the capability of the individual to accomplish his/her regular daily
activities without undue fatigue and still has an ample amount of reserved energy to enjoy
leisure and meet emergencies.

Importance of Physical Education

Physical education is crucial for promoting physical

fitness, lifelong healthy habits, mental health, social
development, academic performance, self-esteem, weight
management, motor skills development, reduced risk of
chronic diseases, enjoyment of exercise, enhanced discipline
and goal setting, and community and cultural awareness.
Regular exercise helps maintain physical fitness, reduces the
risk of health issues like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes,
and instills healthy habits from a young age. Mental health
benefits from regular exercise, such as stress reduction and
improved psychological well-being. Social development
through team sports and group activities fosters essential
social skills and relationships. Regular physical activity can
improve academic performance, enhance cognitive function,
and improve self-esteem. It also reduces the risk of chronic
diseases, making exercise enjoyable and beneficial.

4. Body Composition 9. Power

5. flexibility 10. Reaction Time

The greatest
amount of force a
muscle or muscle
group can exert in
a single effort.
The efficiency with which the
body delivers oxygen and
nutrients needed for muscular
activity.

Transports waste
products from the cells.
Speed is the ability to
perform a movement
or cover a distance in
a short period of time.

The ability to quickly

get the body moving.
The ability to
change the
position your
body quickly and
to control body’s
movements.
Power is the ability
to use strength and
speed.

The ability to
generate maximum
force quickly.
Reaction time is
the amount of
time it takes to
move once you
realized the need
to act.
THANK
YOU!!!.

Physical Fitness Battery
Test
What is the Physical Fitness Test
Battery?
● A fitness test battery is a group of fitness
tests that closely represent the physiological
demands of the sport or event
● A fitness test battery is a collection of fitness
tests. Not just one or two, but a set of five to
seven fitness tests that an athlete completes -
usually in line with a training program and
each athlete's sport - to assess the progress of
the components of fitness that the training
program is trying to develop.
Things to consider when selecting tests

Validity Reliability Facility and Equipment
available

4 5 6
Accurate recording Tester Competence Health and Safety
of scores Considerations
Validity

• The extent to which a test measures what it’s

supposed to measure – i.e. is it valid?

• When choosing a fitness test you need to try pick

one that is suitable and valid for what you are
measuring
Reliability
• The extent to which the result an athlete gets
in a test is repeatable
• An athlete doing a strength test one morning
should get nearly the same score when
repeating the test later that day – their strength
shouldn’t change over that time
• If an athlete gets very different results then this
test would not be considered reliable
Accurate Recording of Scores
• Accurately recording the athletes’ scores is
paramount and they need to be saved for
comparison for a later date
• Need to pay close attention to the unit and precision
of measurement outlined in the test protocols – e.g.
if recording weight to what decimal point do you
record (0.1 or 0.01) and in what unit (kg or lbs)
Tester Competence

• The quality of a test chosen is only as good as the tester administering it

• Testers need to be fully trained in the test protocols
• Need to trial the test before running it in a performance assessment
setting
• There should be no variation in the way the tester administers the test
from one occasion to another – this is “intra-tester reliability”
• There must also be no variation in the way one tester or another tester
administers it – this is “inter-tester reliability”
Health and Safety Considerations
• Coach is responsible for ensuring health and safety of athletes
• Ensuring athletes are:
At an appropriate fitness level
Not carrying an injury that may impede their performance
• Test protocols must be observed
• Environmental considerations must be considered (i.e.
overcrowding, surface safety, equipment safety)
SEQUENCE OF THE TEST
• Sequence of a test battery is 1. Non-fatiguing tests (height
essential for reliability and and weight, skinfold, vertical
safety or horizontal jump test)
2. Agility Tests
• The recommended order by
3. Maximal Strength/Power

associations is: 5. Muscular Endurance Tests
6. Aerobic capacity tests (CRE
tests)
The FITT Formula
FREQUENCY: How often an athlete trains. Frequency can be increased by training a
greater number of times each week
INTENSITY: How difficult an activity is, or how hard the athlete trains. This can be altered
by increasing the weight an athlete is lifting each sessions or by training at a higher
percentage of their maximum heart rate
TIME: The length of a training session, the number of reps completed in a set, or the
number of sets completed in a session
TYPE: The kind of activity/exercise being completed. This can be achieved by using
different types of activities in a session (e.g. circuit training or a multi-sprint session
could be used to develop CVE in a soccer player). It is important to include a variety of
activities but to make sure the chosen activity is relevant to the fitness goal

Food, Nutrition, Health and Fitness

Food, nutrition, health, and fitness are

interconnected aspects of an individual's overall
well-being. Food provides essential nutrients, energy,
and sustenance for bodily functions, while nutrition
studies how the body uses these nutrients to maintain
health. Health is a state of overall physical, mental, and
social well-being, and a well-balanced diet can help
prevent chronic diseases. Fitness encompasses an
individual's physical capacity, including strength,
endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.
Nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting physical
performance, energy, muscle recovery, and overall
fitness. Food as fuel provides energy needed for
physical activities, and pre- and post-workout nutrition
can optimize workout results. A balanced diet and
regular exercise are integral components of a holistic
approach to overall well-being, encompassing physical,
mental, and emotional health.
