FV EAPP Gr12 Q2 AS7 NG

This document provides instructions for students on how to gather data through surveys, experiments, and observations. It outlines the steps to take which include defining the research aim, choosing a data collection method, planning the procedures, and collecting the data. Students are then given activities to practice designing survey questions and collecting data.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND

PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES – G12
Quarter 2 – Week 7

Competency: Gathers Data from Surveys,

Experiments, or Observation
Lesson: Data Collection
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to achieve the

following objectives:

1. Determine the procedures in gathering data from surveys.

2. Choose the most practical data collection procedure for a
research.
3. Collect data from a survey.

CONCEPT

Data collection is a systematic method where findings and

measurements are taken. It helps the researcher obtain first-hand
knowledge and original insights. Having an understanding on how it
is done makes a significant effect in one’s research.

Different approaches can be used according to characteristics

of the target population and the purpose of the researcher in
examining behaviors and intent under different circumstances.
Overall, the data collection process remains essentially the same
across various fields.

Competency: Gather Information from Surveys, Experiments, or Observations.
ACTIVITY NO.1
Getting Started
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct; if incorrect, write the

word or phrase to make the statement correct.

___________1. At the start of data collection, the researcher needs to identify

exactly what he wants to achieve.
___________2. Qualitative data are expressed in numbers and graphs and are
analyzed through statistical methods.
___________3. Quantitative data are expressed in words and are analyzed
through interpretation and categorization.
___________4. The purpose of experiment as data collection method is to
understand the characteristics and general opinion of a group
of people.
___________5. Surveys and observations can be quantitative and qualitative
methods.
___________6. Observation as a data collection method intends to gain in-
depth understanding of perceptions or opinions about a topic.
___________7. To understand something in its natural setting is the purpose
of interview/focus groups.
___________8. Secondary data collection is analyzing data from a population
that the researcher cannot access first-hand.
___________9. Observation is used when the researcher wants to measure or
survey samples without trying to affect them.
___________10. Archival research is a data collection method used to access
manuscripts, documents, or records from libraries or
depositories.

Discussion
STEPS IN GATHERING DATA

Step 1 : Define the Aim of Your Research

Before you begin the data collection process, identify precisely what you
want to attain. Start by writing a problem statement: what is the viable or logical

issue that you simply want to address. Formulate one or more research questions
that define what you want to find out. Depending on your research questions, you
might want to collect qualitative or quantitative data.

Quantitative data is expressed in numbers and graphs and is analyzed through

statistical methods.

Qualitative data is expressed in words and analyzed through interpretations and

categorizations

Step 2 : Choose Your Data Collection Method

Consider what method you will utilize to gather data that will help you find
answer to your research questions.

Data Collection Methods

Method Purpose What to Do

Survey To understand the general Distribute a list of questions to a

Experiment To test a causal relationship Manipulate variables and
measure their effects on others
Observation To understand something in Measure or survey a sample
its natural setting without trying to affect them.
Interview/Focus To gain an in-depth Verbally ask participants open-

or practices. depositories or the internet
Secondary data To analyze data from Find existing datasets that have
collection populations that you cannot already been collected, from
access first-hand sources such as government
agencies or research
organizations

Step 3 : Plan Your Data Collection Procedures

Decide what form the questions will take; if you are conducting an experiment,
make decisions about your experimental designs. Turn abstract ideas into
measurable observations. For example, you want to measure how competent a

leader is based on a certain group’s observation. You might want to think of
aspects of leadership and design rating questions to make it measurable.

Example:

Rate the leader’s performance in terms of the following by putting a check to the
corresponding value:

1- poor 2- fair 3-good 4-very good 5-excellent

Crisis Management
Consistency

Step 4 : Collect the Data

Lastly, you can employ your selected method to measure or observe the variables
you are interested in.

To ensure that high quality data is recorded in a systematic way, here are some
best practices:

• Record all relevant information as and when you obtain data. For example,
note down how many rated 1 or poor the leader’s performance in crisis
management.
• Double-check manual data entry for errors.
• If you collect quantitative data, you can assess the reliability and validity to
get an indication of your data quality.

ACTIVITY NO.2

Getting it Right
(Individual Task)
Directions: Use any platform to collect data and complete the table below
using the following questions:
1. What aspect of yourself is mostly affected by this present crisis or this
pandemic? (emotional, physical, intellectual, social, economic/financial, etc.)
2. What is your satisfaction rating with the government’s response to this
crisis? (1-poor,2- fair, 3- good, 4-very good, 5- excellent)
