Worksheet - Number Patterns 2024

This document contains a worksheet with 4 questions about number patterns and linear sequences. Question 1 asks students to find the common difference and write the next 3 terms of 2 sequences. Question 2 asks students to find the general formula for a decreasing sequence, calculate a term, and determine if a number is in the sequence. Question 3 provides a linear sequence and asks students to determine the value of x, find when a term will be positive and greater than 110, and write the general formula. Question 4 describes patterns in diagrams with shaded and white squares, and asks students to calculate the number of shaded squares in a diagram and which diagram will contain 1500 shaded squares.

WORKSHEET

Number patterns

Please remember that there is a formula to find the general term of a linear
sequence ( 𝑇𝑛 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑). However, in Gr 10 I want you to use the method
clearly outlined in Lesson 2b.
Question 1 [4]
Find the common difference and write down the next 3 terms of each sequence.

1.1. ; 1; … (2)
4 4

1.2 2𝑦 + 𝑥 − 2; 4𝑦 − 𝑥 − ; 6𝑦 − 3𝑥 + 1; … (2)

Question 2 [6]
2.1 Find the general formula for the following sequence:
23; 19; 15; … (2)

2.2 Find 𝑇250 for this sequence. (1)

2.3 Is -100 a term in this sequence? Show all working (3)

Question 3 [10]
A linear sequence is given as follows: 6𝑥 + 8; 2𝑥 − 4; 𝑥 − 4; …
3.1 Determine the value of 𝑥. (3)

3.2 Which term of the sequence will be the first to be positive? (2)

3.3 Find the general formula for this sequence. (2)

3.4 Which term of the sequence will be the first to be greater than 110? (3)

Question 4 [5]
In the diagram below, there are shaded squares and white squares.

Pattern 1 Pattern 2 Pattern 3

4.1 Determine the number of shaded squares in diagram 300. (3)

4.2 Which diagram will contain 1500 shaded squares? (2)
Total: 25
