PRACTICE
A. Use the verbs from the box below to fill in the gaps in the letter. You may need to change
the form of the verb.

play like work want (x2) say have come go (x2) meet live spend be

Hi Jackie,

How are you? I’m very well. I want to tell you something about a person. He lives with me
here in my apartment.

His name is Mike and he comes/is from Canada. He is 27 and he works in a big hotel near
the centre of the city. He really likes his job and he says it’s because he meets a lot of new
people every day from many different countries.

On the weekend, he goes swimming and sometimes we spend time together. We play
tennis or go windsurfing together. He has a very pretty girlfriend called Janet and they want
to get married next year!

OK, that’s enough for now. I’ll write again soon.

Sara.

B. Complete each sentence with the correct form of the verb in parantheses.

I (have) have two roommates. One of them, Sam, is always neat and clean. He (wash)
washes his clothes once a week. (you, know) Do you know Matt, my other roommate? He
(be) is the opposite of Sam. For example, Matt (change, not) doesn’t change the sheets on
his bed. He (keep) keeps the same sheets week after week. He (wash, never) never washes
his clothes. He (wear) wears the same dirty jeans every day. Sam’s side of the room (be,
always) is always neat and Matt’s side (be, always) is always a mess. As my mother always
(say) says, it (take) takes all kinds of people to make a world.
C. Complete this magazine article by a businesswoman, using the present simple forms of
the verbs in brackets.

I usually arrive (arrive) at the office very early. My assistant gets (get) me some coffee. Then
I have (have) a meeting with my team of managers. Sometimes they don’t agree (not agree)
with everything I say, but the meetings usually don’t last (not last) for very long. I don’t eat
(not eat) much at lunchtime – the others go (go) to the canteen but I stay (stay) in my office.
My day usually finishes (finish) at about 6 p.m. I don’t go (not go) to the Office every day. I
work (work) at home some days.
