Inspiritional woman - Chiquinha Gonzaga

A woman and mestizo, she faced all the prejudices of


patriarchal and slave society in order to establish herself as a
pianist, composer, conductor and, finally, class leader in
defense of copyright. A pioneer, Chiquinha Gonzaga opened
wings for everyone, leaving her example of fighting for
liberties in Brazil.
Early life

She was the daughter of the union of José Basileu Gonzaga, field
marshal of the Imperial Brazilian Army and Rosa Maria Neves de Lima,
daughter of a freed slave. Contrary to his family, José Basileu married
Rosa Maria after Francisca's birth. Chiquinha Gonzaga grew up in a
family of aristocratic pretensions (goddaughter of Luís Alves de L. e
Silva, Duque de Caxias) and lived with the rigid paternal family. . He
did his normal studies with Canon Trindade, a reference teacher, and
musicals on the piano with Maestro Elias Álvares Lobo. From an early
age, he frequented roda de lundu, umbigada and other rhythms from
Africa. At the age of 11 he wrote his first composition, the Christmas
song Canção dos Pastores.

Chiquinha participated in the abolitionist campaign
and in the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil.

She was also the founder of the Brazilian Society of
Theater Authors. The organization helped protect the
artist's copyright.

Encouraged several women to enter the music career
and pursue their rights.

Significant career achievements

The need to adapt the sound of the piano to popular taste earned him
recognition as the first popular songwriter in Brazil.

He composed Ó Abre Alas, to embalm the parade of the Rosa de Ouro
cordon, in the Andaraí neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. the first created
