A woman and mestizo, she faced all the prejudices of
patriarchal and slave society in order to establish herself as a pianist, composer, conductor and, finally, class leader in defense of copyright. A pioneer, Chiquinha Gonzaga opened wings for everyone, leaving her example of fighting for liberties in Brazil. Early life ● She was the daughter of the union of José Basileu Gonzaga, field marshal of the Imperial Brazilian Army and Rosa Maria Neves de Lima, daughter of a freed slave. Contrary to his family, José Basileu married Rosa Maria after Francisca's birth. Chiquinha Gonzaga grew up in a family of aristocratic pretensions (goddaughter of Luís Alves de L. e Silva, Duque de Caxias) and lived with the rigid paternal family. . He did his normal studies with Canon Trindade, a reference teacher, and musicals on the piano with Maestro Elias Álvares Lobo.
