Solving Systems of Linear
Lesson
Equations in Two Variables
1 by Graphing, Substitution
and Elimination Method
What’s In
Let’s start this lesson by recalling your knowledge on linear equations in two
variables.
ACTIVITY 1: DESCRIBE ME!
Directions: Draw the graph of each of the following linear equations in a Cartesian
Coordinate Plane.
1. y = 2x + 3
2. 3x – y = 2
3. y = 5x – 1
4. 2x – 3y = 6
Were you able to draw and describe the graphs of linear equations in
two variables? Suppose you draw the graphs of two linear equations
in the same coordinate plane. How would the graphs of these
equations look like? You’ll find out more when you do the activities in
this module. Good luck and God bless!
3
What’s New
In the previous modules, we dealt with lines and linear equations one at a
time. However, many situations in real-life involve more than one linear equation
and more than one variable. This requires that we solve a system of linear
equations using the following method: graphing, substitution and elimination. Now
that you are ready, you will be using these skills to translate word problems into
systems of linear equations and solve them.
What Is It
Systems of Linear Equations means it consists of more than one equation and
variable.
To solve a system of equations in x and y means to find the ordered pairs that
satisfy both equations of the system. There are three methods in finding the
ordered pairs and these are through graphing, substitution and elimination.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
4
2x – y = 2
x 0 1 2
y -2 0 2
Let x = 0 Let x = 1 Let x = 2
2x – y = 2 2x – y = 2 2x – y = 2
2(0)-y = 2 2(1) – y = 2 2(2) – y = 2
0-y = 2 2–y=2 4–y=2
y = -2 2-2 – y = 2-2 4 -4 – y = 2-4
0–y=0 0 – y = -2
-y = 0 -y = -2
-(-y = 0) -(-y = -2)
y=0 y=2
Following the steps in solving the systems of linear equations of two variables by
graphical method, sketch the graph of the following equations and find the solution
set of the system.
Example 2: { Example 3: {
2x + 2y = 5 2x – 4 = 2y
5
x 0 1 2 x 0 1 2
y 2.5 1.5 0.5 y -2 -1 0
Let x = 0 Let x = 1 Let x = 2 Let x = 0 Let x = 1 Let x = 2
2x+2y=5 2x+2y=5 2x+2y=5 2x - 4=2y 2x - 4= 2y 2x - 4=2y
2(0)+2y=5 2(1)+2y=5 2(2)+2y=5 2(0)-4=2y 2(1)-4=2y 2(2)-4=2y
2y = 5 2 +2y = 5 4 +2y = 5 -4 = 2y 2 -4 = 2y 4-4 = 2y
2 2 2y = 5-2 2y = 5-4 2 2 -2 = 2y 0 = 2y
y = 2.5 2y = 3 2y = 1 -2 = y 2 2 2 2
2 2 2 2 -1 = y 0=y
y = 1.5 y = 0.5
6
Aside from graphing, a system of linear equations in two variables may also be
solved algebraically in two ways. One way of solving algebraically is through the
substitution method.

What I Can Do
Instructions: Solve the given problem involving system of linear equation in two
variables by graphing, substitution, or elimination method on a
separate sheet of paper. Show your solution.
Situation:
Because of the quarantine nationwide, most of the people shifted to work from
home set-up and it became a burden to those who don’t know how to cook as they
couldn’t dine-in in any restaurants or fast-food chains. With this, they opted to
order via online using several food delivery applications. In one day, one food
delivery company can receive 110 bookings without cancellation. Most of the orders
are budget meals and snacks. If a budget meal cost Php 80 and snacks for Php 30,
how many bookings of each budget meal if the food delivery company earns Php
5,800 a day?
