Solving Systems of Linear
Lesson
Equations in Two Variables
1 by Graphing, Substitution
and Elimination Method

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

o recall the systems of linear equations in two variables; and
o determine the solution of the given systems of linear equations using any
of the three methods: graphing, substitution and elimination.

What’s In

Let’s start this lesson by recalling your knowledge on linear equations in two
variables.
ACTIVITY 1: DESCRIBE ME!
Directions: Draw the graph of each of the following linear equations in a Cartesian
Coordinate Plane.
1. y = 2x + 3
2. 3x – y = 2
3. y = 5x – 1
4. 2x – 3y = 6

Were you able to draw and describe the graphs of linear equations in
two variables? Suppose you draw the graphs of two linear equations
in the same coordinate plane. How would the graphs of these
equations look like? You’ll find out more when you do the activities in
this module. Good luck and God bless!

3
What’s New

In the previous modules, we dealt with lines and linear equations one at a
time. However, many situations in real-life involve more than one linear equation
and more than one variable. This requires that we solve a system of linear
equations using the following method: graphing, substitution and elimination. Now
that you are ready, you will be using these skills to translate word problems into
systems of linear equations and solve them.

What Is It

A system is a set of conditions joined by the word “and ” and denoted by a

brace { } or { .
Example:
y = 7x -3 and y = 6x + 2
can be written as the system {

Systems of Linear Equations means it consists of more than one equation and
variable.

To solve a system of equations in x and y means to find the ordered pairs that
satisfy both equations of the system. There are three methods in finding the
ordered pairs and these are through graphing, substitution and elimination.

1. Prepare a table of values of each equation;

2. Plot the coordinate points on Rectangular Coordinates System; and
3. Determine the solution of the system by finding the point of
intersection
of the two lines.

of intersection of the two lines. both lines has coordinates (4, 6), it is the
solution of the system. The solution set of the
system is written as { } and it has one
solution.

graphical method, sketch the graph of the following equations and find the solution
set of the system.

Aside from graphing, a system of linear equations in two variables may also be
solved algebraically in two ways. One way of solving algebraically is through the
substitution method.

1. Select a simple equation in the system (either Equation 1 or Equation 2) and

solve for x in terms of y or vice versa to obtain an equivalent equation. You
may write in the form of y= mx + b;

the values of the unknown variable. (Solve for x);

find the value of others. (Solve for y);

C. Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Elimination

Another way of solving a system of linear equations in two variables

algebraically is through the elimination method.

1. {
x y y
x – y = 3x --------- y = - 2x x – y = 3x

2x + 2(-2x) = 14 – (-2x) –y=3

2x – 4x = 14 + 2x -y= 3 +

- 2x – 2x = 14 -y=

-4x = 14 -y=
