1.1 Human Anatomy and Physiology
1.13 Analyze basic structures and functions of human body systems (skeletal, muscular,
integumentary, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, nervous, special senses, endocrine,
digestive, urinary, and reproductive).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Understand Maslow’s Hierarchy of human needs.
 Identify human needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs.
 Define human growth and development and identify its importance.
 List factors affecting growth and development.
 Identify the types and stages of growth and development.
 Differentiate periods of human development.
 Analyze your own location in the life span.
 Describe the growth and development of children.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
The following are overarching questions that will guide students throughout this lesson:
 What are the different perspectives/theories regarding human development?
 How do we change and grow over the life cycle?
 What are the different areas of development and how do they inter-relate?
 Why do people seem to respond differently to death and dying?
 What are the 5 stages a person could go through when faced with death?
 How does growth and development influence patient care?

Teacher Activity (Introduction to New Material):


The teacher will:
 Lead a class discussion to review of the learning objectives and essential questions.
 Lead a class discussion via a teacher-led PowerPoint presentation, “Human Growth and Development”.
 Provide instructions and guidance to students as they participate in the “Life Stages and Cultural
Diversity Project”.
 Lead a discussion about death and dying.
 Provide instructions and guidance to students as they participate in the “Death and Dying Scenarios”.
 Lead class discussions via a teacher-led PowerPoint presentations from HealthCenter21.
 Provide instructions and guidance to students as they complete assignments in HealthCenter21.
 Show the movie “Patch Adams”.
 Demonstrate other expectations / skills.

Guided Practice:
The teacher will:
 Review agenda, learning objectives, and essential questions daily.
 Lead students to recall prior knowledge / experience to make connections to new content.
 Introduce content to be learned.
 Clarify and check for understanding by asking open-ended questions (or by some other type of
formative assessment) throughout instruction. Reteach material as needed.
 Pace the classroom instruction to clarify misunderstanding and provide opportunities for student feedback.
 Introduce new content to be learned and how it connects to learning objectives and answers some (or all)
of the essential questions.
 Demonstrate skill practices students will gain from this lesson.

 The teacher will lead a classroom discussion to check for understanding. The teacher will clarify
misunderstanding.
 The teacher may ask students to reflect on the outcomes from the lesson.
 The teacher may ask students if they met and how they met the learning objectives for the lesson.
 The teacher may ask students to demonstrate what was learned.
 Teacher and students may play Kahoot! (or some other type of game) to check for mastery.
 Student will share why the lesson is important via guided questions.
 Student will complete some sort of exit ticket.

 Complete Human Growth and Development, Unit 1: Genetics, Unit 2: Prenatal and Neonatal, Unit 3:
Childhood, Unit 4: Adolescence and Adulthood, and Unit 5: Aging and Death in HealthCenter21.
 Complete the Patch Adams assignment after watching the movie “Patch Adams”.
