ADI Lab 18 Guiding Questions Student Copy 1
Guiding Question: How can the chemical properties of an aqueous solution be used
to identify it as an acid or a base?
a. Watch the following videos on characteristics of acids and bases and list some
characteristics of acids and bases. Which ones are physical and which ones are chemical?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeGXJplg_TE
Watch the following video on independent and dependent variable and then identify yours:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaewZmc4TYQ
**You will have more than one dependent and control in this lab*
c. In the table below, identify your independent, dependent and control variables of your
experiment.
Getting Started
To answer the guiding question, you will need to design and conduct an investigation that
explores designing a method to test whether or not certain aqueous solutions are an acid or a
base. To conduct this task, you must determine what type of data you need to collect, how you
will collect it, and how you will analyze it.
1. To determine what type of data you need to collect, think about the following questions:
a. How will you test certain chemical properties of a solution develop a method see
if it is an acid or a base? Which 6 chemical properties will you be testing? (See
Lab)
For the First Data Table, you will be testing Acid 1, Acid 2, Base 1, Base 2 to investigate the
properties of acids and bases. You will test using the following 6 chemical properties:
conductivity, magnesium, litmus, universal indicator, anthocyanin (cabbage juice),
phenolphthalein OR bromothymol blue.
pH indicator guide:
Litmus Test: Blue turns red with an acid. Red turns blue with a base.
Anthocyanin: Turns green/yellow with a base; else pink
Phenolphthalein: Turns pink in the presence on a base; else clear
Bromothymol Blue: Turns yellow with acid; else Blue.
b. How will you determine whether an aqueous solution is an acid or a base? (What
materials will you use and how will you use them? How many drops of acid
and/or base will you use? How many drops of indicator will you use?)
We will use the acids/bases (6 drops), universal indicators, anthocyanin (3 drops), litmus
paper, magnesium, conductivity tester, and bromothymol blue (3 drops). We will put the
tests into the drops of acid/base to get a result.
c. What type of measurements or observations will you need to record during your
investigation? Look and record the color changes to the solution and indicators.
Look for signs of chemical reactions.
2. To determine how you will collect your data, think about the following questions:
a. How often will you collect data and when will you do it? (Are you going to do more than one
trial?)
b. How will you make sure that your data are of high quality (i.e., how will you
reduce error)? How will you best carry out the experiments so mistakes are not made?
We will take our time and follow all procedures when measuring data. We will also make out
procedures detailed as to not cause confusion.
d. How will you keep track of the data you collect and how will you organize it? (How are
the well plates and the data table organizes to help you keep track of your observations?)
We will create a data table to keep track of our observations. This will make it easy to track and
collect data in an efficient manner.
Create the data table (reaction matrix) for recording your observations (Use the insert and make a
table feature in word to make an electronic data table. Make sure you have a title on your table)

*AFTER YOU FILL IN THE FIRST DATA TABLE YOU WILL THEN DEVISE YOUR
OWN METHOD FOR TESTING UNKNOWN SOLUTIONS. THIS WILL BE ANOTHER
