The lesson plan teaches students about tessellation by having them cover plane figures using shapes like triangles, squares, and rectangles without gaps or overlaps. Students will first review shapes and then cover sample figures through an activity. They will analyze the patterns used and learn that tessellation creates repeated patterns without gaps. Finally, students will create their own tessellations in groups and present their work to the class.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 3

Prepared By: Rachelle C. Guerrero

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the Pupils should be able to:

K: Explain how to tessellate plane using triangles, squares, and others shape

that can be tessellated

S: Tessellate a surface using triangles, squares, and other shape that can be
tessellated

A: Realize that in real life situation,we can find tessellation in our everyday
surroundings.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Content /Topic Tessellating a Plane Figure

Learning Competency: Tessellating plane using triangles, square, and

other shape that can be tessellated

Reference: Lesson guide in Elem. Mathe 3 pp. 345-356, Ofelia

G. Chingcuangco

Materials: Cut- out of squares, rectangle, triangle and other

plane figure, pictures and marker

III. PROCEDURE

Teachers Activity Pupils Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Prayer

Okay, class let us all stand up for the prayer.

May I ask kent to lead the prayer

Classmate, let us pray.

Our Father, who art in Heaven

Holy be your name ,thy kingdom

Come,thy will be done

On Earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread

And forgive us our sins as we forgive those

who sins against us

Do not bring us to the test but

Delivery us from evil , Amen

2. Greetings

Good morning, class !

How are you this morning

Good morning, Ma'am

We're good
3. Energizer

Before we start, for us to get energized, let us sing

the action song entitled " Shape Song"

Okay. Have a seat class. (Pupils will do the Energizer)

4. Checking of Attendance

who is absent for today?

Very good!
5. Review None ma'am
Okay who can still remember what was our
previous lesson?

Exactly. Very good! Our previous lesson was about shapes

ma’am
Now class I am going to describe a figure and all
you have to do is to guess what kind of figure it is.
Are you ready?
Okay let’s start.
a. I am a figure without sides, what am I? Yes ma'am. We’re ready
b. I am a figure with three sides, what am I?
c. I am a four-sided figure, what am I? Circle ma'am

Triangle ma'am
Now let’s do it in another way. I am going to
show you a figure and then you have to describe Square ma'am
it.
Rectangle ma'am

a.

That figure is a triangle and it has three

b.
sides ma’am

That figure is a square and it has four sides

c. ma’am

d.
That figure is a rectangle and it has four
sides ma’am

That figure is a hexagon and it has six sides

Very good! Let us all give ourselves a clap! ma’am

B. Lesson Proper

1 Awareness

Now ,I will show you something.

Janel ,do you know
what is this object?

Can you describe Yes . a Rubik's cube, Ma'am

this Rubik's It is a small cube covered with shapes.
cube?
Square, Ma'am
What shape is
used to cover it's
surface?

Next,what is this object?

A chess board, Ma'am

The chess board is covered with shapes that

Yes Jhane is square, Ma'am.

Can you It's surface is covered with shapes, ma'am.

describe
this chess board?

In this two objects, what have you observed?

Very good! It is covered with shapes.

2. Activity

Now I have here three different big figures. I need

volunteers to fill up the big figures with smaller
shape by following the sketched pattern. (Pupils will start doing the activity)

About covering figures ma’am.

Based on the activity, what do you think is our

topic for today?

Very good.

Today, we will be talking about covering or

tessellating a plane figure using different shapes.
We used triangles with different color to
3. Analysis cover it's surface, ma'am
In the first figure ,what shape did you used to We form a triangle figure, ma'am
cover the surface or plane?

What figure did you form?

We used square to cover it's surface,ma'am .

We form a square figure, maam

In the second figure, what shape did you used to
cover the surface or plane?

What figure did you form? We used rectangles with different colors to
cover its surface figure, ma'am

We form a rectangle figure, ma'am

In the third figure ,what shape did you used to
cover the surface or plane?

What figure did you form? No ,it does not have gap or overlap ma'am.

Now , what have you observed about the pattern We cover them with shape like squares,
mode ? Is there any gap/overlap in putting this triangles, and rectangles ma'am
together?

What did we do with this plane figure ?

The other term for covering is Tessellating.

Tessellation ma’am
Tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface,
often a plane, using one or more geometric
shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps.

Again this patter is called?

Tessellation are repeated pattern , ma'am
Yes, very good! It's tessellation.
Tessellation do not have gaps or overlaps
4. Abstraction
ma'am
Based on your observation, what is Tessellation?

What else? (Pupils will say again what is Tessellation)

Very good! Tessellation are repeated patterns and We tessellate a given surface using shapes
it is placed without gap or overlaps. like square , triangles and rectangle of the
same size ma'am
Again who can say what is Tessellation?.
Diamond Ma'am

How do you tessellate a given surface? Hexagon Ma'am

Aside from that , what other shape could you

think of that can be tessellated?

Very good

5. Application

Now, I will group you into 3 groups. Each group

will have to create your own tessellation in the
plane using triangles, squares and others shape
that can be tessellated then write down how many
shapes are there in each figure.

1.

2.

3. Yes ma’am

(Pupils will do the activity)

I will give you 10 minutes to do it. After 10 (Pupils present their work)
minutes, present your work to the front. Are we
clear?
Alright! Time’s up. Present you work.

Okay let us all give ourselves 5 claps!

IV. Assessment

Direction: Write T if the figure shows tessellation and write NT if it doesn't shows tessellation. .

V. Assignment.

Direction: Choose the figure which can tessellate. Make a cut-out of that figure using a colored
paper and make a design showing tessellation.
