ALOPECIA
Alopecia is when hair is completely missing from where
it would normally grow and shows little sign of regrowth.
This often causes the skin to become dry and brittle. If
left untreated, the skin will thicken, making hair regrowth
even more challenging.
Many things can cause hair loss. The change in

llergic skin disease in dogs is the topic of much
research due to its prevalence and the extent
to which it can affect dogs’ lives. As a result,
there are several different treatment options
available. These treatments typically follow a
pattern – the more robust (and more effective)
they are, generally the more side effects they cause.
Steroids
Steroids (like prednisolone) are a mainstay of treatment
for many cases of allergic skin disease. They’ve been
around for a long time and are very effective. Oral
steroids can rapidly damp down inflammation during
acute flare-ups, and they are a long-term option for some
patients. Importantly, they’re a lot cheaper than some of
the available newer medications. However, steroids have
a range of side effects. In the short term, they usually

Neurological disorders in dogs can lead to gait abnormalities, affecting their ability to walk and move normally. Some
common neurological disorders that may result in gait abnormalities include:
EPILEPSY
Cause: Recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical
activity in the brain.
Symptoms: Seizures can vary in type and severity. During
or after a seizure, dogs may exhibit gait abnormalities,
disorientation, or temporary weakness.
Diagnosis: Based on a history of recurrent seizures and

NEUROPATHIES
Cause: Various diseases affecting the peripheral nerves.
Symptoms: Gait abnormalities, weakness, muscle wasting,
and loss of reflexes. It can be acquired or hereditary.
Diagnosis: Nerve conduction studies, electromyography,
and sometimes genetic testing.
CEREBELLAR DISORDERS
Cause: Conditions affecting the cerebellum, a part of the
brain involved in coordination and balance.
Symptoms: Ataxia (lack of coordination), wide-based
stance, and a high-stepping or wobbly gait.
Diagnosis: Clinical signs and neurological examination,
often supported by advanced imaging like MRI.
