Q.1 (a) Two signals x1(t) and x2(t) are shown below. Obtain the expression for y (t ) which is
convolution between the signals x1(t) and x2(t). Use the relation y(t ) x1 (t ) x2 (t ) x1 (t )x2 ( )d to
obtain the convolution using the graphical method. [15M]
(b) The input x(t) and the impulse response h(t) of an LTI system are given by x(t ) u (t 1) and
h(t ) e(t 1)u(t 1) . Find the output response of the LTI system using the convolution analytical
method. [10M]
Q.2 (a) Obtain the compact Fourier series for the periodic signal shown below. Plot the
amplitude spectra for the first four harmonics (C0, C1, C2, and C3). Mark the axis values clearly
in the plot (even if one value is missing in the plot zero marks will be awarded). Show the steps
and equations used. [10M]
(b) Find the exponential Fourier series for the periodic signal 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑒 −𝑡 with time period T =1
shown below. Draw its magnitude and phase spectra for the first 4 harmonics and also
include the 0th harmonic. Mark the axis values clearly in the plot (even if one value is
missing in the plot zero marks will be awarded). Show the steps and equations used. [15M]

Sketch and label each of the following signals. Mark the axis values clearly in the plot.
(i) x(1 t )[u (t 1) u (t 2)]
(ii) x(1 t )[u (t 1) u (2 3t )] [6+6=12M]
(b) Consider an LTI system whose response to the input signal x1(t) (see Fig. (a)) is y1(t) (see
Fig.(b)). Determine and sketch carefully the response of the same LTI system to the input
signal x2(t) (see Fig.(c)). [8M]

(b) If g(t) = f1(t) * f2(t) (where * stands for convolution operation), find G(ω) (= FT of g(t)) using
time-convolution property. Draw magnitude spectra of F1(ω), F2(ω) and G(ω). [2+3=5M]
