Mid Sem

The document is a midterm exam for a Signals and Systems course. It contains 6 questions testing concepts of convolution, Fourier series, Fourier transforms, and linear time-invariant systems. Question 1 has two parts: (a) asks to convolve two signals graphically and (b) asks to convolve two signals analytically. Question 2 has two parts: (a) asks to find the Fourier series for a periodic signal and plot the amplitude spectra of the first 4 harmonics, and (b) asks to find the exponential Fourier series for another periodic signal and plot the magnitude and phase spectra of the first 4 harmonics.

Second Semester, 2021-22, Signals & Systems (EEE/ ECE/INSTR F243)

Mid-Sem Exam (Closed Book)
Time: 8.30 AM – 10.00 AM Date: 16-03-2022
Total Marks: 90 Day: Wednesday
Instructions:
 Answer all SIX questions.
 All parts of a question should be answered in continuation.

Q.1 (a) Two signals x1(t) and x2(t) are shown below. Obtain the expression for y (t ) which is

convolution between the signals x1(t) and x2(t). Use the relation y(t )  x1 (t )  x2 (t )   x1 (t   )x2 ( )d  to

obtain the convolution using the graphical method. [15M]

(b) The input x(t) and the impulse response h(t) of an LTI system are given by x(t )  u (t  1) and
h(t )  e(t 1)u(t 1) . Find the output response of the LTI system using the convolution analytical
method. [10M]
Q.2 (a) Obtain the compact Fourier series for the periodic signal shown below. Plot the
amplitude spectra for the first four harmonics (C0, C1, C2, and C3). Mark the axis values clearly
in the plot (even if one value is missing in the plot zero marks will be awarded). Show the steps
and equations used. [10M]

(b) Find the exponential Fourier series for the periodic signal 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑒 −𝑡 with time period T =1
shown below. Draw its magnitude and phase spectra for the first 4 harmonics and also
include the 0th harmonic. Mark the axis values clearly in the plot (even if one value is
missing in the plot zero marks will be awarded). Show the steps and equations used. [15M]

Q.3 (a) A continuous-time signal x(t) is shown below and u(t) is a step function.

Sketch and label each of the following signals. Mark the axis values clearly in the plot.
(i) x(1  t )[u (t  1)  u (t  2)]
(ii) x(1  t )[u (t  1)  u (2  3t )] [6+6=12M]

(b) Consider an LTI system whose response to the input signal x1(t) (see Fig. (a)) is y1(t) (see
Fig.(b)). Determine and sketch carefully the response of the same LTI system to the input
signal x2(t) (see Fig.(c)). [8M]

Q.4 Given the Fourier transform (FT) pair, 𝑒 −𝑎𝑡 𝑢(𝑡) ↔ 𝑎+𝑗𝜔. Find the Inverse FT of 𝑋(𝜔) =

Q.5 The input and output relation of a stable and LTI system are related by the differential
𝑑2 𝑦(𝑡) 𝑑𝑦(𝑡)
equation 𝑑𝑡 2 + 6 𝑑𝑡 + 8𝑦(𝑡) = 2𝑥(𝑡). Using the appropriate property, find the impulse
response h(t) of this system. Also mention clearly which property you have used. [5M]

symmetry & time-shift properties. [2+3=5M]
(b) If g(t) = f1(t) * f2(t) (where * stands for convolution operation), find G(ω) (= FT of g(t)) using
time-convolution property. Draw magnitude spectra of F1(ω), F2(ω) and G(ω). [2+3=5M]
