I. State the different definitions of the Humanities based on their respective period.
Renaissance Period - The word came to refer to the set of disciplines taught in the
universities, which included grammar, rhetoric, history, literature,
music, philosophy, and theology- a body of knowledge aimed to make
man “ human, cultured, and refined. Humanities are academic
disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture. In the
Renaissance, the term contrasted with divinity and referred to what is
now called classics, the main area of secular study in universities at the
time. The Renaissance scholars and artists were also called humanists.
Medieval Period - The humanities dealt with the metaphysics of the religion philosopher.
The goal was the cultivation of the spiritual life and the preparation for
the hereafter. Humanities were used to distinguish between areas of
study that pertained to humans versus those that pertained to God.
Areas that belonged to the human realm—mathematics, philosophy,
science—were considered part of the humanities.
Humanities Sciences
- Humanities help you understand others through language, history, and culture. They promote
social justice and equality and show how people have tried to create a moral, spiritual and
intellectual sense of the world. Humanities teach empathy. And they teach us to evaluate evidence
skeptically and to consider more than one side of every question. Humanities students develop
writing and critical reading skills. The humanities encourage us to think creatively. They teach us
to reason about being human and to ask questions about our world. Humanities develop an
informed and critical citizen. Democracy could not thrive without humanities.
