As Math-10 Q3 W2

1. This mathematics activity sheet helps students learn about permutations, including linear permutations, distinguishable permutations, and circular permutations. It provides definitions, formulas, and examples of each type of permutation. 2. The activity sheet contains exercises for students to identify the different types of permutations in word problems and supply missing values in permutation formulas. It also includes word problems for students to solve involving permutations. 3. A performance task at the end asks students to identify givens, show their work, and box their final answers for word problems involving permutations, including arrangements of books on a shelf and seating arrangements of couples around a table.

MASTER ME
This activity sheet will help you learn and be familiarized on the following:

1. linear permutations;
2. distinguishable permutations;
3. circular permutations; and
4. solves problems involving permutations.
Read and study the following definitions and formulas regarding the different types of
permutations.

Linear permutations – refers to the different possible arrangements of a set of objects. The
number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time is:
𝑛!
𝑃 (𝑛, 𝑟) = ;𝑛 ≥ 𝑟
(𝑛 − 𝑟 )!
where: n – is the total number of objects
r – is the number of objects to be taken

Distinguishable permutations – refers to the permutations of a set of objects where some of

them are alike. The number of distinguishable permutations of n objects when p are alike, q
are alike, t are alike and so on is given by:
𝑛!
𝑃=
𝑝! 𝑞! 𝑟! …
Circular permutations – the different possible arrangements of objects in a circle. the number
of permutations, P, of n objects around a circle is given by:

𝑃 = (𝑛 − 1)!
n-Factorial – the product of the positive integer n and all the positive integers less than n.
n! = n(n-1)(n-2)…. (3)(2)(1)
ex. 5! = 5(5-1)(5-2)(5-3)(5-4)
5! = 5 (4) (3) (2) (1)
5! = 120

Note: 0! = 1

ACT ON
A. Identify if the following situations are linear, distinguishable, or circular permutations.
Encircle LP if it is linear, DP if distinguishable, and CP if circular.

1. Arlyn wants to arrange her 8 potted plants in a row. LP DP CP

2. Find the number of permutations of the letters from the
word MISSISSIPPI. LP DP CP
3. In how many ways can 3 people be seated around a circular
table? LP DP CP
4. If there are 12 people and only 8 chairs are available, in how
many ways can they be seated? LP DP CP
5. Find the number of permutations of the digits of the number
775 568 868. LP DP CP

B. Supply the missing blank with the correct answer.

1. In how many ways can 7 cars be parked if there are 10 available parking
spaces?
Given: n = 10 r = ______
𝑛!
From: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) = ; then,
(𝑛−𝑟)!
10!
𝑃 (10, __) = (10−___)!
𝑃 (10, __) = _______

2. In how many ways can 6 people arrange themselves in a row for picture
taking?
Given: n = 6 r = ______
𝑛!
From: 𝑃(𝑛, 𝑟) = ; then,
(𝑛−𝑟)!

6!
𝑃 (6, __) = (
6−___)!
𝑃 (6, __) = _______

3. How many distinguishable permutations are possible with all the letters from the
word PHILIPPINES?
Given: n = 11 letters that are repeated: P = 3; I = 3;
𝑛!
From: 𝑃 = 𝑝!𝑞!𝑡!… ; then
___!
𝑃 = 3! ___!

𝑃 = _____
