GLOSSARY of terms AT THE SUPERMARKET

Market a place where buyers and sellers meet for the


sale of goods:

Supermarket a small store or department in a large store


selling a special type of goods:
Minimarket a grocery store or delicatessen.

To buy to get possession of (something), by paying


money;
purchase:

To go shopping. to visit shops for buying or examining


goods:

To sell to transfer (goods or property) (to someone);

Bag a container made of a soft material, as paper or


plastic
Scales a balance for weighing

Freezer a refrigerator, refrigerator compartment, or room


held at or below 32°F (0°C), used esp. for freezing food.

Fridge a refrigerator
Aisle a walkway between or along sections of seats,
shelves, counters, etc

Shelf a thin, flat slab of wood, metal, etc., attached


horizontally to a wall or in a frame, for supporting
objects:

Rack a framework of bars, pegs, etc., on which things


are arranged:a clothes rack; a ski rack.

Product all the goods or services that a company


produces:

Packaging. a container in which something is packed:


Barcode a series of lines printed on or applied to an item for
identification by an optical scanner

Price the sum of money for which anything is bought, sold, or


offered for sale:

Escalator a continuously moving stairway on an endless loop for


carrying passengers up or down

Warehouse a building for the storage of goods or merchandise.

Customer a person who purchases goods or services from another;


buyer:

Supervisor a person who supervises workers or the work done by


others;

Manager one who manages a business or one of its parts


Sales assistant
Cashier an employee who totals purchases and collects payment
from customers, or who dispenses money in a bank.

Till a box, case, or drawer into which the money taken from
customers is put, now usually part of a cash register

Barcode reader a series of lines printed on or applied to an item for


identification by an optical scanner.

Cheque a written order directing a bank to pay money:

Cash money or an equivalent, as a check, paid at the time of making


a purchase.

Cash only
Banknote a promissory note, payable on demand, issued by an
authorized bank and intended to circulate as money.

Coin a piece of metal stamped and issued by a government as


money:

Discount coupon
Change o give or get smaller money in exchange for:
Sales tax.
Purchase To get or obtain by the payment of money or its equivalent;
buy:

Delivery the carrying and turning over of letters, goods, etc., to a


designated recipient or recipients.

Ticket a slip of paper that shows the holder has paid a fare or
admission or is entitled to some service:

Receipt a note that states that someone has received money or


goods:

Guarantee an assurance, esp. one in writing, that something is of


specified quality, content, benefit, etc., or will please the customer or
perform satisfactorily for a given length of time.

Refundable to give back or restore (esp. money);


repay:

Department a part of a larger structure; a division or branch, as of


business:

Bakery a shop in which bread, cakes, etc, are sold

Frozen food.
Dairy products. a place where milk and cream are kept and butter and
cheese are made.

Delicatesen a store selling foods already prepared or requiring little


preparation for serving, as cooked meats, cheese, salads, and the
like.

Beverages any potable liquid, esp. one other than water, as tea,
coffee, beer, or milk:

Fruit
Vegetables any plant whose fruit, seeds, roots, tubers, bulbs,
stems, leaves, or flower parts are used as food, as the tomato, bean,
beet, potato, onion, asparagus, spinach, or cauliflower.

Groceries merchandise, esp foodstuffs, sold by a grocer

where medicines are sold, usually also selling cosmetics, stationery,
etc.
