HT - Part Probe Calibration

The document provides steps to calibrate a part probe on a Sinumerik control system. It outlines setting a work coordinate system, referencing a tool, and configuring work offsets. It then details calibrating the probe stylus runout, positioning the probe for calibration, and using a ring gauge or sphere to calibrate probe radius or diameter. Finally, it describes an alternative procedure to calibrate the probe length for negative tool length strategies using a fixed datum like the machine table.

Part Probe Calibration on Sinumerik control

Attached is a procedural guide designed to provide a fundamental understanding of probe setup on

the Sinumerik control system. It's important to note that the steps outlined may require customization to align
with the specific commissioning of your machine. In the example provided below, the MCS Z zero point is
situated at the uppermost position of the machine's travel. Additionally, it's crucial to remember that all axis
movements within the MCS will occur in the negative direction.

Setting up a Part Probe for a Positive tool length Strategy

(Typically used on 4 and 5 axis machine tool kinematics)

1. Set G54: Begin by setting the G54 work coordinate system. And Hit Cycle Start

2. Tool Reference Setup:

a. Reference Tool Placement: Insert a reference tool or a tool of known length into the spindle. (See
Figure1)
b. Alignment with Block Gauge: Lower the tool to align it with a block gauge placed on the table. (See
Figure1)
c. Set WO G54: Configure the Work Offset (WO) G54 to establish
X0, Y0, and Z0 positions. (See Figure2)

3. Create and Load Part Probe:
a. Create a part probe (3D probe) and load it into the spindle.

4. Stylus Indication:
a. Runout Adjustment: Use a magnetic base and indictor. Utilize
four set screws to finely adjust the probe stylus for minimal
runout. (See Figure3)
b. Runout Verification: Verify the runout, aiming for a range of
2 to 4 micrometers.

5. Positioning for Calibration:

a. Move to the X0 Y0 position and set Z to 10mm or 0.300 inches
MD51751 (measuring range Manufacturing DATA).

6. Measurement Work Preparation:
a. Access the "MEAS. WORKP." (Measurement Workpiece) section.
b. Probe Calibration: Initiate the probe calibration process.

c. Z-axis Calibration: Calibrate the Z-axis specifically for the probe.

d. Cycle Start: Execute the cycle start to apply the calibrations.

7. Ring Gauge Setup:
a. Place a ring gauge onto the table.
b. Position the probe in the middle and inside of the ring gauge.
c. Meas Workp. > Calibrate Probe > Radius.
d. Enter in the diameter in the field. Hit Cycle Start.
8. The Part Probe is Calibrated

Setting up a Part Probe for a Positive tool length Strategy with Sphere
1. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for the probe length.
2. Mount a Tooling ball on the table and position it over the ball.
3. Meas. Workp. > Calibrate Probe > Comp to Sphere
4. Enter the Diameter into the field and hit cycle start.

Setting up a Part Probe for Z for a Negative tool length Strategy

(Typically used on 3 axis machine tool kinematics)

1. Determine the fixed datum for reference (typically the table surface) this will be the zero location.
2. Create and load a part probe into the spindle
3. Make sure the active WC offset is set to zero
4. Manually set the tool length offset of the part probe to the table surface. (this will be a large negative number)
5. Select the length calibrate function under the calibrate probe key in Measure Workpiece
6. Have the probe positioned just above the table surface within the measuring range of MD51751
7. Set the Z0 value in the length calibrate probe screen to zero
8. Press cycle start to activate the calibration routine (this will cause the Z axis to move down)
9. An updated Tool Length offset should now be seen for the Probe
