•Am I able to express my opinion in face of
resistance?

solutions ?
•Do I have the ability to take unpleasant decisions ?

Emotional Intelligence
•Individuals with high emotional intelligence are conscious of
both their positive and negative emotional states,
negativity—frustration, sadness, or something more subtle—
and able to identify and manage them.

• They develop awareness of the emotions of people around

them. Mostly we see that this quality of heightened
sensitivity makes them better colleagues, friends, family

EQ Scenario #1

Consider this: Rajesh was in charge of a critical, day long video

conference meeting between multiple departments. But at the
eleventh hour, when all the participants
#
were kept waiting the
meeting could not take place due to technical issues. The co-
ordinator, Rajesh had to face everyone’s displeasure.

In this situation, how would Rajesh react?

EQ Scenario #1 Analysis
If Rajesh had lashed out in the situation, it would have shown
that he was unable to recognise his emotional state and
manage his emotions and impulses.

If Rajesh had maintained his calm, the indication would have

been that he understood his mental state and self-regulated
his emotional expressions. This is a sign of an individual with a
high level of Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation
Self-Awareness & Self-Regulation

Self-Awareness is one of the EQ parameters. People with a

high level of self-awareness can identify their strengths and
weaknesses, emotional state and how it impacts people
around them.

Individuals who can Self-Regulate have high degree of Self-

awareness manage disruptive emotions and impulses.
EQ Scenario #2

Consider this: Ravi has been trying to pass a competitive exam

for a while, and this is his second failure. He is understandably
upset, but is hopeful they’ll pass next time. But his friend, Sam,
makes fun of him. Tabassum sees this and convinces Sam not to
make make fun of Ravi anymore.

What do you think the incident tells us about Ravi, Sam,

Tabassum?
EQ Scenario #2 Analysis
Ravi has encountered failure twice. Yet, he is ready to try again. This
shows that he is a person with signs of great Self-Motivation and Self-
Awareness.

Sam has less empathy or social awareness and could not self-regulate his
disruptive emotions.

Tabassum possesses both of these attributes. She also manages to

convince Sam to stop his insensitive actions. She has a high level of Social
Skills .

Self-Motivation, Empathy, Social Skills are all integral parts of EQ

People with high self-motivation strive to improve or meet a standard
of excellence. They are committed to their initiatives and are optimistic.

People with empathy often sense others’ feelings and perspectives, and
take an active interest in their concerns. They can understand what others
need and understand a group’s inner dynamic .

Social skills is a combination of effective communication, ability to

manage conflicts and build bonds. Individuals with high social skills can
become an agent of change or sustain change.
Recognize the attributes
needed to function and
grow in a corporate
environment
Character and Adversity
Rita was sad after several unsuccessful interviews. She decided
that she wouldn’t try further.

Hearing this, her mom invited her#to watch as she boiled a piece
of carrot, an egg, and ground coffee beans. After a while she asked
Rita what she could see.

The hard carrot had become soft. The soft egg had become hard,
and the ground coffee had changed the colour of the water.
Character and Adversity
Rita’s mother asked: “Which one will you be? When adversity knocks
on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a
coffee bean?”
#
Each has its merits.

Be Flexible; like the carrot. Be Resilient; like the egg. Think

Strategically and Resolve Conflicts like Rita’s mother. Use all these
tools to make decisions.
