Long Questions
1. (a) Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2 GHz. (1) The data that describes the CPU performance
is the clock rate and the type of CPU. (1)
(b) (i) Primary storage device: 2 × 1 GB DDR2 SRAM (1)
Secondary storage device: 120 GB hard disk drive (1)
(ii) Virtual memory is the memory space created in the hard disk to hold
programs and data stored in the RAM, when there is not enough RAM to hold
the program. (2) Swapping means the interchanging action of programs and
data between the RAM and the hard disk. (2)
(c) IEEE 1394 port is used to connect to a digital video camera, so as to capture
the video from it. (1) USB 2.0 port is used to connect to most of the peripheral
devices such as printers and mice. (1)
(d) Terry needs to add a wireless LAN card to the notebook computer. Also, he has to
add a handwriting pad / voice recognition system so as to input Chinese into the
computer. (2)

2. (a) Program counter contains the memory address of next instruction to be executed.
(1) Instruction register contains the instructions to be executed by the CPU. (1) The
accumulator stores the data to be calculated and the results after calculation. (1)
(b) (i) Addresses 01 to 10 store the program, while addresses 11 and 12 store the
data. (2)
(ii) The output is 8. (1)
(iii) To find the absolute value of the difference between two inputs (1)
(c) (i) Part A is operation code, which represents the assembly instruction. Part B is
operand, which represents the values or addresses to be processed. (2)
(ii) Since the operand is of 10 bits, the maximum number of accessible addresses
= 210 = 1,024 (3)

3. (a) A: monitor (0.5), B: keyboard (0.5), C: magnetic strip card reader (0.5),
D: bar code reader (0.5)
(b) Dot matrix printer. (1) It is because it requires the least operation cost. (1)
or
Thermal printer. (1) It is also economical since paper is the only consumable. (1)
(c) (i) Touch screen (1)
(ii) Information kiosk (1)
(d) (i) Agree. It is because the value of check digit is calculated from the
product ID (1) and thus identical products will give the same check digit. (1)
(ii) It is because the product information should be stored in the main computer
instead of being stored on the bar code. (1)
(iii) (4 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 0 + 2) + (8 + 8 + 9 + 0 + 2 + 3)  3 = 122 (1)
The last digit of the result is not zero, check digit = 10 – 2 = 8 (1)
X = 8 (1)

4. (a) Head crash occurs when the read/write head of the hard disk makes contact with
the hard disk’s surface. The disk surface is damaged and the data is destroyed. (2)
(b) (i) Disk caching improves hard disk performance by acting as a temporary
high-speed data holding area between a hard disk and a CPU. (2)
(ii) RAID improves hard disk performance by saving data using several
inexpensive connected hard disks (instead of one hard disk) to expand storage
capability, increase access speed and increase reliability. (2)
(c) (i) When files are created and deleted repeatedly over a long period, data is
scattered in the hard disk. This will increase data access time.
Defragmentation is a process to rearrange the files so that they are stored in
adjacent locations, the data access speed will increase. (2)
(ii) If there are only a few file creations and deletions, defragmentation is not
needed. (1)
(d) No. The computer’s operating system has ‘plug and play’ function. The OS
already has the device driver of the hard disk. When the user installs the new hard
disk to the computer, the OS will install the required device driver automatically.
(2)
(e) Virtual memory (1)

5. (a) (i) A multi-user operating system is designed so that many users can be
connected to the system at the same time to perform tasks. (1)
(ii) A multi-tasking operating system allows the user to run multiple programs at
the same time. (1)
(iii) A multi-processor operating system supports the use of two or more
processors to run the programs, usually complicated programs. (1)
(b) A multi-threading operating system divides a program into parts called threads. It
allows a user to run two or more threads at the same time while a multi-tasking OS
does not. (1)
(c) (i) A: graphical user interface (1), B: command line interface (1), C:
menu-driven interface (1)
(ii) Advantage: It is not necessary to learn the commands in order to control the
computer. / More attractive (any one  1)
Disadvantage: More resources (e.g. memory space) are needed to run. (1)
(d) (i) It is created by a digital video camera and a video capture card. (1)
(ii) It is created by a musical keyboard and a sound card. (1)
(iii) It is created by a microphone and a sound card. (1)
