Bpts Basic Productivity Tools Lesson Idea Template

This lesson plan teaches 4th grade science students about the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in a community. Students will create a PowerPoint slide show with audio, subtitles and pictures to display the information accurately. The teacher will introduce the lesson with an example presentation. Students will then storyboard their project and create an individual PowerPoint presentation recording their narration. They will present their videos to the class for a grade. Creating the multimedia project gives students autonomy while learning about ecological roles through hands-on experience with productivity tools.

Basic Productivity Presentation Tool

Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: roles of a community

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th grade science
Content Standard Addressed: S4L1.a Develop a model to describe the roles of
producers, consumers, and decomposers in a community.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can use the Desktop Version of PowerPoint to create a story about the roles of producers,
consumers and decomposers in a community.
I can use appropriate platforms and tools to meet desired objectives.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool:

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Desktop Version PowerPoint

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology
tool?)

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding XApplying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating X Creating

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning

and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will first introduce the students to the lesson by presenting my own example to them first.
Students will watch my example and then I will show them how I used a story board to help
make my movie. Students will first create their own story boards, in order to map out their
plans. I will go over the fundamental steps to making a story in PowerPoint, and then I will
show them how to use the record tool in power point. I will tell students the goal for this
lesson is to be able to use PowerPoint to create a story that is recorded with audio and visual
representation. I will also explain that they must accurately display information about the
roles of species in a community. Once students understand their goals they will be given class
time to work individually on their computers to make the project. The teacher will walk
around class and help students as needed. Once students are done they will download the
MP4 version of their video. The videos will be presented to the class and the teacher will
grade the videos as they are presented based on the rubric. Students will then be given
feedback with their graded rubric.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
 Students will be given 40 mins in class each day for one week to work on this project.
 Students will work individually on their assignment but are allowed to ask other
students for help and advice as well as the teacher.
 Students will be expected to make a story board before starting on PowerPoint.
 Students will be asked to use headphones when recording to avoid noise distractions.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The desktop version of PowerPoint is UDL because it supports engagement, representation

and action and expression. It supports representation because each student’s project will
display audio and visual aspects that will be observed by the teacher and students. This is
good for visually impaired students as well as hearing impaired students. It is action and
expression because each student is creating their own unique story with the tools they are
given. This supports engagement because students are given creative freedom on these

projects and are allowed to use a various number of resources to create a project in a way of
their own choice.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This activity impact student learning in a couple of ways. Students will gain a better
understanding of the important roles of decomposers, consumers, and producers as they
must present accurate information in their stories. Students will also gain a better
understanding of how to use a basic productivity tool. I look forward to the part in the lesson
where students are actively working on their PowerPoints. It will be a good experience for
the students as they will be in the process of trial and error as they try to troubleshoot and
create these stories. As a teacher, IS will enjoy walking around and helping the students solve
their problems and create something.
