CHEM 312 – Semester 231

Physical Chemistry II – Laboratory – Course Credits: 0-4-1

Catalog Description:
Experiments in physical chemistry including chemical kinetics, transport properties of gases and
liquids, and vibrational and electronic spectroscopy.
Co-Requisite: CHEM 311

Introduction:
The course is a four-hour lab each week. The course is intended to acquit the students with the
practice of up-to-date physical chemistry experiments allied with CHEM 311, Physical Chemistry II.
Approximately 10 experiments will be performed during the semester and they are linked to
reactions’ kinetics determination, molecular spectroscopic applications, and properties of transport
phenomena.

Objectives:
- To apply the principles of kinetics, spectroscopy, and molecular properties presented in the
physical chemistry lectures in some illustrative experiments.
- To understand the interconnection between the experimental foundation and underlying
theoretical principles and appreciate the limitations inherent in theoretical treatments and
experimental measurements.
- To gain familiarity with a variety of physicochemical measurement techniques. To develop
laboratory skills and the ability to work independently.

Successful completion of the course requires:

- Students must finish all 10 labs and midterm and final written major exams.
- The experimental work will include a pre-lab quiz (as needed) for some experiments, the
performance of the experiment in the laboratory, and a written report for each lab.
- Students may give an oral presentation to the class about one of the labs from the course,
describing it to the other students in detail as independent research.

Lab Materials and Pre-lab Preparation:

- A softcopy text of the laboratory course will be available as PDF files under Laboratory
Experiments for students enrolled in the course. The experiments may be copied and printed
using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Definitions and calculations of standard deviations and propagation of error analyses need to be
revised.
- The Physical Chemistry constants and reported data can be obtained from several reference
books (CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, International Critical Tables, Lange’s Handbook,
etc.). Some Web sites (NIST, etc.) contain reliable information.

Scoring and Grading:

1. Lab discipline (Attendance and Quizzes) counts as 100 points (individual per lab).
The final scores will be normalized to 75 ± 5 %).
- 25 points for attendance.
- 25 points for cleaning the work area after the experiment.
- 50 points for 2 lab quizzes (at least 2 experiments at a time).

2. Lab Report grading per experiment counts as 100 points (individual per lab).
The final scores will be normalized to 75 ± 5 %).
- 30 points for proper reporting of the laboratory data ...
- 70 points for the written reports (20 for the introduction, 20 points for the data analysis and
presentation, and 30 points for the accuracy and precision of the data).
Note:
o Electronic Lab reports are due electronically within 72 hours as pdf via the Blackboard.
o A penalty of 3 points per day, including weekends, will be deducted for late lab reports.

3. Midterm Major Exams count as 100 points

- The midterm major exam will cover procedures/analysis of data from selected experiments.

4. Final Exam counts as 100 points

- The final exam will cover procedures/analysis of data from selected experiments.

Tentative Grads Distribution:

- > 85% A+
- 80 – 85 % A
- 75 – 80 % B+
- 70 – 75 % B
- 65 – 70 % C+
- 60 – 65 % C
- 55 – 60 % D+
- 50 – 55 % D
- < 50% F

The student must complete ALL assignments to receive a grade
