Ekc 361 Syamsul Assignment

This document describes an assignment for controlling the outlet temperature of a shell and tube heat exchanger. It contains a student's responses to questions about the heat exchanger process and control objective. The heat exchanger consists of a shell with tubes inside where one fluid (steam) flows in the shell and another (water) in the tubes, exchanging heat between them. The outlet temperature of the water is controlled by manipulating the steam flow rate using a controller connected to a control valve and temperature sensor. The control objective is to maintain the water outlet temperature at a set point.

SHELL AND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER CONTROL PHILOSOPHY

Describe the process of this shell and tube heat exchanger.
The heat exchanger consists of an outer shell in a cylindrical shape with a tube inside it in the
shape of a “U”.
One fluid runs through the tubes while the other flows through the shell surrounding the tube.
These fluids will transfer heat from one fluid to another. They can either flow in a parallel or
counter-current arrangement. The tubes usually contain the cooler fluid while the shell is
usually filled with the hotter fluid. Naturally, the heat will be exchanged from the hotter
region to the colder region.
In this case, the hot fluid will warm the cool fluid. Steam is used in the shell side of the heat
exchanger and the tube side is filled with cold water. The hot steam is used to heat the cold
water. As the cold water enters the tube, heat exchange occurs between the steam entering the
heat exchanger and heat will be transferred from the steam to the cold water. Thus, the outlet
of the tube side will be hot water.

How do you control the hot water outlet temperature of the heat exchanger?
By regulating the steam entering the tube.
The outlet temperature of the hot water can be controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the
steam entering the heat exchanger.
The temperature sensor at the hot water outlet will continuously monitor the temperature of
the hot water and provide feedback to the controller. The controller will compare the output
temperature obtained from the sensor with the set point and if there is a difference between
the two temperatures, it will send an output (current) signal to the transducer. The transducer
will obtain the current signal from the controller and convert it into a pressure signal to be
sent to the control valve so that it can regulate the amount of steam entering the heat
exchanger by opening or closing.

What is the control objective?

To maintain process fluid outlet temperature at the chosen set point, by manipulating the
steam flow rate.
