This document contains 8 math word problems involving geometric shapes such as cylinders, cones, spheres, and their properties such as surface area, volume, ratios, etc. The problems provide the relevant measurements and ask the reader to calculate various values like water level changes, surface areas, lengths, weights, numbers of objects, costs, and other quantitative results. Formulas for pi, surface area, volume, ratios, and conversions between units are applied as needed to arrive at the solutions shown in the answers provided.

1. A cylindrical cistern whose radius is 7 cm is partly filled with water.

If a conical block of iron

whose radius of base is 3.5 cm and height is 6 cm is wholly immersed in the water, by how
much will the water level rise? (Use = 22/7) Ans. 0.5 cm

2. A cylindrical vessel whose base is horizontal and radius 3.5 cm contains sufficient water so
that when a sphere is placed in the can, the water just covers the sphere. Given that sphere
just fits into the can. Calculate: a. The total surface area of the can in contact when the
sphere is in it. b. The depth of water in the can before the sphere was put into the can. (Use
= 22/7 and give your answer in proper fraction).
Ans. 7/3 cm
3. A girl fills a cylindrical bucket 32 cm in height and 18 cm in radius with sand. She empties the
bucket on the ground and makes a conical heap of the sand. If the height of the conical heap
is 24 cm, find : a. Its radius and b. Its slant height. (Leave your answer in square root form).
Ans. 36 cm, √(1872) cm
4. The radii of two right circular cylinders are in the ratio 2:3 and their heights are in the ratio
5 : 4. Calculate the ratio of their curved surface areas and also the ratio of their volumes.
Ans. 5: 6, 5 : 9

5. A copper wire 4 mm in diameter is evenly wound about a cylinder whose length is 24 cm and
diameter 20 cm so as to cover the whole surface. Find the length and weight of the wire
assuming the specific gravity to be 8.88 g/cm3. Ans. 426.24 π2 gm

6. A vessel is in the form of an inverted cone. Its height is 11 cm and the radius of its top which
is open, is 2.5 cm. It is filled with water upto the rim. When lead shots, each of which is a
sphere of radius 0.25 cm are dropped into the vessel, 2/5 of the water flows out. Find the
number of lead shots dropped into the vessel. Ans. 440

7. The given figure, shows the cross-section of a cone, a cylinder and a hemi-sphere all with the
same diameter 10 cm, and the other dimensions are as shown. Calculate:

a. The total surface area,

b. The total volume of the solid and
c. The density of the material if its total weight is 1.7 kg.

8. A tent is in the form of a right circular cylinder upto height of 3 m and then becomes a right
circular cone with a maximum height of 13.5 m above ground. Calculate the cost of painting
the inner surface of the tent at the rate of Rs.4 per sq. m, if the radius of the base is 14 m.
Ans. Rs.4136
