8 Manual Handeling

The document discusses hazards associated with manual handling activities like carrying pipes and components in a piping assembly workshop. Workers face risks like muscle strains from repetitive movements and lifting heavy materials. Short term effects include fatigue and sprains, while long term issues involve musculoskeletal disorders and reduced quality of life. The workshop already uses mechanical lifting aids, provides training, and PPE. Further controls recommended include automating tasks, adjustable workstations, workplace assessments, back supports, and health surveillance.

Manual handling in a piping assembly workshop can significantly affect workers in various ways, Incorrect carrying, or moving heavy pipes, spools can strain
muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This can lead to muscle sprains, strains, and tears, as well as conditions like back pain, herniated discs, and shoulder
injuries.

Short term effects, Increased fatigue, sprains, muscle strain, etc.

Continuous exposure can lead to chronic pain, musculoskeletal disorders MSDs, and reduced overall quality of life.

What are you already doing?

1. Mechanical aids equipment are available at the workshop such as trolleys, forklift for lifting and moving pipes and assembled parts.
2. Regular training sessions conducted to train workers on proper lifting techniques, posture, and body mechanics.
3. Appropriate PPE including safety boots, safety goggles, hand gloves, and high-visibility jackets, provided to manual handlers.
4. A schedule that allows workers to take regular breaks to rest and recover from manual handling activities is in place.

What further controls/actions are required?

organize the following control measure according to the heirarchy of control

1. Explore options for automating certain manual handling tasks to reduce the need for direct physical effort by workers.
2. Provide adjustable workstations and lifting platforms suitable for different heights and reach, to reduce the need for awkward postures.
3. A comprehensive workplace assessment to be conducted to verify its freedom from any potential obstructions.
4. Purchase back support belts and other appropriate PPE to provide additional support during manual handling tasks.
5. Routine health surveillance to be conducted periodically for manual handlers.
